2025 NCAA Wrestling Thread

From what I was told Nolf has trained no gi only a handful of times.

Brooks brother is doing mma. Greg has talked about doing mma so he has been doing no gi.

Gi or no gi…

Deciding on a takedown that by its very nature puts your opponent in your back seems very ill advised in a grappling comp…

I think Brooks’ brother is a pro now if memory serves. He’s training with the same coach that Greg worked with for CJI. I used to go there for open mats a lot, I like that coach a lot. He helped my wrestling, particularly Greco, a lot. He knows a lot about fighting and BJJ.

Yes but he’s a novice. I was told before facing Ruotolo he trained a handful of times. I’m not sure if he has taken it more serious since.

I belive so. I spoke to him and his dad last fall but he hadn’t turned pro yet.

I know some other high level wrestlers that aren’t in college yet that may do no gi once their wrestling careers are over.

Pan american freestyle champs, multiple time super 32 champs, state champsz etc.

Side note, I was at PSU about 4 weeks ago for a freestyle duals and ran into Cael at an IHOP of all places.

He posted some goofy darce off that setup and said it was what he was trying to do.

I hope he was kidding to have a reason to make that reel. Because you have to be pretty silly to think a fantastical thing like that is viable against a high level guy.

He posted this comical one earlier in the year…

I’m sounding like a Nolf hater. I’m not. I have just been disappointed with how he’s handled his transition to BJJ. He could have been good.

I don’t think he is taking it as serious as people may think.

Nolf was a great folk wrestler…

And a mediocre free wrestler…

The differences between the two is being able to finish shots cleanly with little to no scrambling…

I watch grappling exchanges on the feet and think about how these guys would get thrown in their domes by an average Greco guy…

Anyone here heard of this Japanese kid? Looks very impressive and will be wrestling for Penn St. this year.

Ok, I wasn’t sure, lol.

Ono’s run at senior worlds last year was the most beautiful expression of wrestling I have ever seen…

I was a completely average college guy who did Greco. I can attest to the pour of your post. A really good or great Greco guy…. People get hurt badly In MMA.

I just see so many openings in upper body positions and just how uncomfortable everyone is those positions…

I’m reading that usually NCAA wrestlers go from folkstyle to freestyle after they graduate, Ono will have to adjust in the reverse. It’s also uncommon for a world champion to be entering the NCAA so should be very interesting to see how he performs.

They say he’ll likely be at 133lbs while Blaze will wrestle at 141. He also only has 2 years of college eligibility so will have to make the most of it.

It also looks like isn’t fair how powerful and dominant Penn St. is, wtf.

Ha…

So much to say, but, it would all just be rehashed and it’s late…

You can not win a world championship in folk…

Yes, from what I gather Folkstyle wrestling is only adopted in US High School, NCAA and USA Wrestling right? World Championships and Olympics are Freestyle wrestling.

So would it be safe to say that it’s much more common for folkstyle wrestlers to have to adopt to freestyle if they want to compete on the International scene but less common for freestyle wrestlers adopting to folkstyle, especially high level freestyle wrestlers such as Ono?
