2025 NCAA Wrestling Thread

a ton of shenanigans have gone on over the years…

lindland vs sieracki sticks out as i personally saw how that left bad blood for years…

the Lindland one i remember But i find it hard to believe they made Douglas beat Gable 5x in 1 day

is it really that surprising in the late 60s?

i am sure they would have awarded the bronze it posthumously on the podium…

all kidding aside…

it was one of the top 5 wrestler about to die on the mat that i have personally seen…

musukaev might be 3 of them…

PDIII a few years ago at the open ranks…

and there was one a couple of years i remember watching and a buddy and i both just losing our mind thinking dude was going to die… it was the absolute greatest thing to watch… i brought it up to him awhile back because for the life of me i can not remember who it was, what tourney, or if it was international or domestic… he remember the incident but could not recall who it was either…

total shame because it was glorious…

to me it is 5 matches with same person in 1 day is hard to believe even in practice .If true i lost a lot of respect for gable

i would just say gable was still an incredibly awkward kid who could barely speak to anyone outside his immediate circle…

he would just be doing whatever he was told at that point…

actually looking at dates, gable would have been 21ish at the time, but, the point still stands…

plus, i would add…

i can not imagine a world where if either of the boys were in the same situation they would stand on principal alone and choose not to wrestle again for an opportunity to represent their country and the world championships…

the other thing i would also say, i can also not see a world where it would matter how many times they had to wrestle after losing 2 straight to an opponent…

when that has happened to either of them (and trust me it has happened to both for world team spots) they were so beat down/disappointed/emotional they would have just been smashed again…

i just can not see it being any different for an athlete 55 years ago…

gable retired from competition at 25 and retired from coaching at 48…

both relatively young for each discipline… he was done as fried chicken each time… his pace is not something that can be sustained for for long stretches of time…

the candle that burns twice as bright only lasts half as long…

he seems to have mellowed in his older years..

this is a great listen…

How are Otto and Max feeling heading into U23s? Are they already in Serbia?

they landed a few hours ago… should be at the hotel by now…

far as i can tell they are feeling good…

otto says his ankle is much better and he has not tweaked it since being in croatia, so, a good solid month…

max sent me a pic of his new tactical haircut earlier this week which tells me he is ready…

as always, i am full of optimism heading into another big world tourney…

i will say, otto has put on another 2-ish KGs in the last couple of months and is really starting to fill out to a decent sized 67kg guy… i haven’t seen in him in the flesh since december-ish so i get surprised every time i see a pic or him competing…

max will probably be on the small side of 60kg for several more years… but him walking at 64kg now vs him at 64kg 2 years ago is a big difference physically…

anyway, once draws drop i will give my take on the paths of our guys… those should hit sunday early our time…

I don’t think Gable was the one who initiated it. The Olympic coaches were the ones who insisted on it. Bobby Douglas beat him, then they called them back to wrestle again. And again.

ive seen it written but im not sure they had 5 matches in 1 day if so it be a record

When did this day supposedly occur? Douglas beat Gable 11-1 in ‘68 trial and captained US team. He retired in’70 ofter a Bronze in the Worlds. Gable didn’t wrestle Douglas at the trials in ‘72.

the googlewebs says it was the '70 trials

Interesting, I don’t even know if Gable tried out for that team, Worlds wasn’t long after NCAAs and that was his senior year.
