Yeah man. Iā€™m 43 and joined when I was 23 I think - while training with Shawn Tompkinsā€¦that dude is who got me into BJJ.

I was kickboxing and he asked me if I could hang around after our personal training session and just do my best to hold another cat down who was training for a fight. Then I had to switch and do my best to get upā€¦had no idea what I was doing but I suppose that wasnā€™t the point.

It was just to help prep the other guy who I was larger and stronger thanā€¦fell in love with rolling with dudes that day.

Yup. Found it while installing Y2K updates for a company in the Silicon Valley back when I was 19 or 20. Found a bootlegger shortly thereafter and developed a taste for Brazilian Vale Tudo and Japanese MMA. Great times. The greatest times even.

He was old school democrat, prob still is. True belief in free speech. As free as you can have it for such a domain. His brother wouldā€™ve ran that place like reddit if he didnā€™t care as much. Looking back, he was a horrible businessman. When I was younger I thought the top men were volunteer or something they were that bad and I was that naive. I didnā€™t even know you could make money on the internet then. I thought they were just doing it as a hobby lol. He was offered cash by an OGer and refused until this bs offer was made. Someone had to be in his ear for that epic fail. How do you tank a domain like mixedmartialarts.com after the TUF craze?

Who was the short hobbit he had for a business partner? I remember reading he promoted himself to Black belt despite never actually receiving a white belt. He also welched on a bunch of bets. With turds like that at the helm it was only a matter of time.

I also discovered it in 02 from either my jujitsu instructor or from a popular BB forum I used to frequent. I never joined a community of any kind after that.
