Go take a shivworks EWO class and report back!
TD,
The first thing you need to do is think fo someone who has never trained a day in their life.
Think of what you would teach them in the first six months of Tim Duncan MMA
3hrs a week x 24 weeks 72 hrs.
Then remove anything you think they wonāt be able to get in that time.
Then think about how you would cram all that material into say 12-14 hrs (a weekend seminar)
Iām with you. Iām just sharing information in a thread made for that purpose.
100 percent this. I reeeee out in a lot of these threads about the most important but least sexy part of āself defenseā, has little to do with actual martial skill sets.
One thing I am shameless about is playing 7 degrees of DaveFu with anyone who can kick my ass.
That list has sadly gotten a lot longer over the years.
I remember when I was at a buddyās bachelor party in the late 90ās and I recognized the bouncer there and rattled off who he was, what he trained at and where. His jaw dropped and his attitude flipped because I wasnāt just some drunk idiot. I was THE drunk idiot.
I knew that because I guy Iād roll with trained with him and introduced me to submissionfighting.com lol
I try to dispel a lot of the womenās self-defense myths and change their mindset. Striking for them will be ineffective. Running away is a bad idea, are you going to win a foot race with your attacker? Do not avoid the fight if it is already upon you, have more violence of action than what your attacker planned for. Trying for eye gouges will just break your fingers, biting will be more effective. I also have them feel the power of a RNC to pique their interest in BJJ.
For techniques, I usually go over a bodylock takedown, basic framing to a Gracie stand-up, and explain the pros/cons of various positions. The goal is mostly to encourage continual training.
You should tell them to always scratch the attacker and get that d.n.a under their fingernails, too
So you teach them to stay off the ground.
Do you teach them what to do WHEN they end up on the ground?
Yep
