Don’t want to derail the thread - brief update, she is doing radiation now. As if a nasty brain tumor wasn’t enough, she had a stroke during her third surgery, paralyzed her on her left side. She spent a while in a rehab hospital and is now back to walking again, though she can’t run (yet). Left arm/hand is coming more slowly, she can’t build Legos or play guitar but those are goals for the rest of the year.
Not goddamn fair for a teenage girl to have to deal with this shit, living in hospitals for months at a time, losing most of her friends, etc., but we are all doing the best we can.
I’m the one sitting on the bomb that recurrence rates are 60% within five years - the oncologist won’t tell her that, and says death rates aren’t healthy/helpful to talk about, in his experience. I’m trusting him on that. Not even my wife knows.
But reading the cancer treatment literature - holy shit but does it move fast. Stuff that was cutting edge five years ago is now gone and forgotten and out of date and replaced by far better stuff. Tons of brilliant and hardworking folks are fighting cancer, and it’s amazing on a macro level. Sucks on an individual level, yeah, but I’m fairly certain had she been born 20 years earlier, she’d be dead now. There would have been no way to get that thing out without killing her. We’d have just had to let nature take its course.

I can’t imagine how hard that is to deal with. It s hard enough watching your kids go through the bumps in everyday life. I pray that she recovers .

If I’d have been born 20 years earlier, I would’ve lost my eyesight to Retinopathy a decade ago and not being able to OG! Modern treatments and the people who create and carry out the procedures are the best of us. I hope the small steps continue and soon enough become giant leaps into a fantastic future for you all

Emotional update from Ben Askren- he’s speaking and has some strength back. He currently weighs 147 lbs. He hasn’t weighed that since high-school he says.

Heartbreaking. Mad to think he wrestled and fought for most of his life, yet his biggest battle would be post-retirement.
Ben proved he was a true soul the way he took the flak following the Masvidal KO. No excuses, no hard feelings… embraced it, with humor and dignity. Good qualities.
I wish him a strong and speedy recovery. Hope he gets to enjoy the rest of his life with his wife and kids. What a fighter!
