I always wonder this too. I mean I’m sure they know but it’s such an impolite question to ask you rarely hear people speak about it.

I actually pointed it out to the person I know with the shakes. He then explained his situation, so he definitely knew something was up

Being able to look these dudes dead in the eyes and square up with them was cool as fuck.

How many flush headkicks are landing in an MMA fight? Not many. Most get blocked or partially land.

Boxers take way more trauma to the head over the course of a career.

Yup. Boxing is way worse. More rounds, 16 oz gloves… sparring with headgear is even worse too. Also, aren’t most boxing fights basically unlimited knockdowns? I don’t know boxing like I do MMA but I’ve never seen a fight stopped due to a specific number of knockdowns. Only because a fighter couldn’t continue.

Knew a guy who was a national level boxer. From when I first met him he was very sharp, then over the years his condition slipped to slurring words. Weight loss. Neck surgery. A whole bunch of medical issues.

I used to have chats with him about geopolitics, etc. Smart guy. Was a massive communist though. Had a Che tattoo.
Top notch guy though.

He died of MND and it came on very fast

Well, it’s usually 3 in a round. Some don’t have that limit, and it’s up to the referees discretion, but even then a good ref is going to stop the fight after 3

I’ve heard three in a round as well but I’ve never seen one stopped like that before. I don’t watch boxing all the time but yeah 3 in a round is nuts and should always be stopped.

It happened in Mike Tysons Punch Out all the time.

I’m sure I’ve seen it in a real boxing match, but it is rare. 3 minutes isn’t much time to get 3 knockdowns

I’m not disagreeing - purely asking for my own benefit - but do you have any idea why MMA might lead to more of this than boxing, judo, etc.?

Boxing is definitely worse. There have been lots of deaths too. I wonder what the numbers would be for something like Judo. Training is probably safer now but I know a lot of people have gotten fucked up from being dropped on the head repeatedly.

Haha, I was being purely selfish: I don’t have kids, but I did get kicked in the head a lot. 🙂

In all seriousness there is a very long history of boxing, at least here in the U.K., and whilst there are individual stories which are undeniably tragic, I don’t think there’s the level of dementia implied by this report - and assuming my admittedly hearsay knowledge is correct, I just wonder why.

That’s true, but historically participation in boxing is orders of magnitude higher than MMA - even ignoring casual training.

Many areas used to have a 3 knockdown rule. If a fighter was dropped 3 times the fight was over via a TKO. But, that’s not the case anymore. But it’s rare that a referee will allow more than 3 knockdowns in a round. Once in a while if the knockdowns are quick flash knockdowns with the fighter not being hurt too badly, a ref might not stop it even after 4 knockdowns, but it’s very rare.
