I’m usually the one pushing for one or the other… helps when you have other higher belts who are interested as well, but depending on the school/instructor of the day, that can feel like pushing a boulder uphill.
I mean divisions in bjj schools have existed forever.
The Machados would train anyone from whatever style.
Carlson Gracie Schools were more rough and tumble back in the day and were better vale-tudo guys.
Helios kids have always been about self defense etc.
BTT were ex Carlson guys and they were the first to seriously specialize in wrestling.
I’d prefer to just continue being heterosexual
This is the version of sambo these guys are coming from
It’s basically MMA on an open mat with headbutts, soccer kicks and sometimes even low blows legal
To be Sambo you need to be a strong Russian. BJJ you can slow role. Russians don’t live long and Sambo guys have short careers. Sambos best practitioner Fedor got triangled by BJJs average fighter Werdum
Yeah he was an average -Heavyweight World Champ.
Werdum was well above average.
I’m surprised so many people picked Sambo. The sambo worlds are still pretty niche imo. Best base for mma, but who wants their kid in mma?
I don’t care if my kid can wrestle because I don’t want him applying anything in the real world, just competition and BJJ competition is in a great place. There is tons of people competing at all levels, the sport is really blowing up, and if you are talented, you can make money without damaging your brain.
Neither.
If anything, just use some free weights to give your son cauliflower ear so people don’t fuck with him.
You can’t go wrong with either 3 but for a child, Judo / wrestling over BJJ (respectfully). You learn the first 2, you can (relatively speaking) transition to BJJ..
Also, wrestling gets them involved in their HS team sports which is a big thing for socialization and not being a nerd.
I dont know of any sambo schools in the area, so BJJ by default
I binged 3 hours of combat sambo matches on youtube a few months ago and like it better than mma. MMA with the gi basically and those guys know how to throw.
There is like no legit sambo in the states.
wrestling and adding jiu jitsu later is the sweet spot for American kids.
USA judo is largely a joke too
all will have benefits to a kid
but find a GOOD BJJ school that integrates wresting - many do these days. Modern leg lock game in BJJ is the best there is right now thanks in large part to the europeans/aussies (and foundational guys like danaher obv).
Only because of the fence. In a parking lot, he gets out and beats Werdum into the living death.
Shut up ![]()
It’s the truth. One exchange and Werdum was on the canvas. He got lucky there was a cage, which doesn’t exist in most of the world.
BJJ star Frank Mir was handily beaten by Fedor right after a throw out of the Sambo playbook.
There’s not many great Sambo places and I’m not living in Russia
