Apart from it being silly jingoism that doesn’t make sense, it’s also a typical trait of authoritarians and totalitarians to dehumanize their opponents.
It’s especially dangerous when they, like cotton, reserve the right to define what a Communist is and make it apply to a lot wider perspective than just people who believe in the dictatorship of the proletariat.

I actually agree with you. Communists are not bad people, they’re just utopian (in the literal sense, not marxist).
And as much as I bitch about it, I’m actually a big fan of the left. I spend a lot of my time following their discourse, watching their lectures, podcasts and debates.
Their ideas and strategies are fascinating but the right wing is so anti intellectual, it drives me up the fucking wall. It’s impossible to get right wingers interested in the actual theory that drives the praxis they bitch about every day. All they want to do is virtue signal.

The modern left that are actual Communists openly in some variation think Communism means the government gives them free things so they can do whatever they want and to dissent against that government simultaneously. They argue for gulags to be built for themselves. It’s lazy , entitled, narcissistic losers that thinks the government in a Communist society owes them everything. It’s mental illness.
Theory Underground is great, for example. It was started by two Amazon warehouse workers turned theorists. They’re Gramsci’s organic intellectuals. It’s beautiful.
Douglas Lain’s Sublated Media is another. He makes excellent short documentaries on the left. They always have cool little twists or insights at the end. Although his partner Chris Cutrone is kind of annoying.
Emancipations with Daniel Tutt. He’s a great lecturer.
And then there’s Midwestern Marx and Haz’s podcasts (he’s Jackson Hinkle’s partner). They were all former Bernie Bros.
The Autodidact’s Toolkit is a philosophy professor who makes short 10 minute youtube videos for philosophy students on mostly western marxist theorists and their ideas. Great for people new to the left. There are lots of other philosophy type videos directed at students.
