The first season of the HBO series The Last of Us was a massive success. Fans of the original video game loved it, and critics did too.
After an extremely long wait, the second season debuted last weekend. The reception to the first episode was generally quite positive. However, there was one scene in the The Last of Us season two episode one that some fans seemingly didn’t quite buy. Specifically, MMA fans.
In one scene of the new episode, protagonist Ellie is seen practicing jiu jitsu with another character. After an early struggle, Ellie locks up a submission from bottom position, and forces her foe to tap out.
When it comes to jiu jitsu, those in the know seemed to be unconvinced by the sequence. See what fans had to say of the BJJ sequence In the show below:
“Everybody is clowning on this scene,” wrote X user Daniel M, another skeptic, whose credentials are unclear. “The issue isn’t that she took him down. The issue is that they didn’t do it in a believable way. Other movies have conveyed the same idea by having the character use weapons, the environment, or simply be more cruel.”
Many other users had critiques of the jiu jitsu scene in The Last of Us, too.
“They literally had to tell him to act like he’s struggling to stand up when she had her legs wrapped around him,” wrote one user. “Dude dragged her like she was a rag doll and you mean to tell me he couldn’t get a good grip and lift her up and slam her on the ground to end her shit? Stahp it.”
“Bruh she tapped him with an omoplata,” wrote another user who claims to be a BJJ black belt, and probably knows what he’s talking about. “What even is this show?”
What did you think of Ellie’s BJJ skills in the first episode of The Last of Us season 2? Were you convinced, or did the show’s choreographers miss the mark? Let us know in the comments.
She should be in the UFC.
And this year’s winner for most poorly written thread title…
Her face should be etched into the front of the championship belts.
Give the professor a fucking break JSH. Long Night
Had to read it and try to decipher.
Totally ruins the show, no way I can believe the zombie show is real with shitty bjj
It would appear she is applying a thumb lock while in an omoplata position.
It was so bad.
Its all a count down clock now.
I cant wait for the internet to explode again cause of how bad 2 is.
Not watching but…was is just like every BJJ/MMA scene in the 2010’s?
Back then, TV BJJ was just constant transitioning from one random sub to another for no reason. It was just slam, them kimura, knee bar, gogoplata, triangle, usually ending up in an armbar. At this point the other guy would finally get angry enough to just pull away and stand up out of it. Then he would KO the bad guy’s MMA henchman or Bas Rutten for that bullshit.
Her opponent could rearrange her face and make it hot!
Unfortunately this is exactly the kind of unrealistic feminist bullshit that gets women hurt and even killed by convincing them that they can also do this shit in real life.
Never forgot a story a Policeman told me of a girl taking on a guy stone cold sober during the day with moves she had learnt (and I kid you not) from ‘‘feminist self defence’’ classes at her college.
She ended up having broken eye sockets, nose and jaw as well as losing multiple teeth. Also broke her hand punching his skull while the guy she attacked didn’t even have a scratch on his face.
As well as teaching diluted jiu-jitsu along with poor boxing skills this class taught the women that the testicles of a man are like the weak point of a boss in a video game. Once you really hurt him there he will be incapacitated just like they show in the movies.
After what happened to this woman the class was disbanded and there are no records on the college website of it ever even existing now lol.
People reach out to my coach all the time and ask if he does women’s self defense classes. He’s like “Yeah, Every day from 11-1, and 6-8. It’s called BJJ”. Dumbing down actual combat to some shit that will never work IRL gives people this false sense of ability, and gets them hurt. Just like giving 9 year olds black belts in mcdojos.
A guy I work with claims to be a TKD black belt and I’ve tried to get him to come to BJJ and he says the “My skills can kill you, you just roll around.” and then I say “Cool. Let me come train with you then” and then it’s “My teacher doesn’t like mixing martial arts”
I never played the games so I didn’t care about the show.
Fans of the game seemed to hate the show and the casting of a hammerhead shark of shovel faced bitch as the main character.
So showrunners are already in a hole with the fans and they just keep digging deeper with dumb stuff like the shovel head girl poorly doing jiu jitsu and beating a large in shape man.
