There’s a whole lot of UFC fighters with [better things to do](https://www.mmamania.com/ufc-news/484082/dana-white-confirms-islam-makhachev-verbally-agreed-to-ufc-336-title-fight-before-pulling-out-it-backs-up-the-division) than fight in the UFC, and you can add Justin Gaethje to that list. Gaethje won the biggest fight of his career back in June, [smashing Ilia Topuria](https://www.mmamania.com/ufc-news/452407/justin-gaethje-shuts-down-ilia-topuria-immediate-rematch-he-quit-twice) to capture the lightweight title, a longtime career goal. I wanted him to retire, but i actually love the volk fight. id much rather see that than fight a younger contender ---

I think he’s being a chicken. He’s a very tough fighter, but he overachieved slightly in winning the belt, and he loves being the champion and where the narrative is right now, and he doesn’t want to defend and possibly lose.
