180 would’ve been a feasible catch weight. And all reasonable demands. There’s no excuse for why the UFC never got this done.

I don’t think it was fair to ask Silva to cut more weight than usual, and GSP not cut any weight. Silva would have been even more dehydrated, GSP wouldn’t have been dehydrated.
People love to point out Chael beating Anderson for 4.5 rounds, but never bring up GSP getting dropped by a Condit head kick. Silva had an injured rib in that first Chael fight, just look at how the rematch went.
If GSP wanted the fight bad enough, he could have went up to 185 to fight Silva. Instead, he waited on Bisping to have the belt. Not Silva, not Weidman, not Rockhold, but Bisping.

A catch weight is perfectly reasonable. Then neither guy loses their belt or their shine at their weight.

Reasonable requests imo. I don’t know if he beats him but he could. With Silva he can hurt you really fast. It GSP lunged in at the wrong time he might get dropped with a jab or knee, Silva then swarms him.
So GSP needs to fight a perfect fight and Silva has multiple chances to finish him.
Would have been one helluva fight. GSP had speed and clearly VERY GOOD wrestling. Silva had that matrix like ability to see folks and target them precisely.

Exactly. The size could be an issue but I would bet GSP was as strong as Lutter, etc and msybe close to Weidman and Chael.
I think a couple successful takedowns make this a GSP win. Even though Georges was a damn good striker, I think prime Anderson has a big advantage there. Sad we didnt get to see it.

Not only did Chael say GSP was way stronger than he thought he’d be, but I think Chael said GSP was the second strongest MMA guy he’d ever trained with in ANY weight class.
Chael was funny and said he knew GSP would be good but thought that he, himself, could compensate with his size and strength, but that GSP was freaky strong.

GSP had no problem going to 185 when the champ was a one eyed Bisping, easily the weakest MW champ in 20 years. He wanted no parts of a real MW so he promptly vacated.
Prime Anderson folds GSP at 185 and he knew it so he never went up, everything else is bullshit.
The UFC has never been open to catchweight fights between champs, GSP just wanted to save face with an offer he knew would be rejected.
If it did happen Silva would take GSP’s jab away and Georges would lose his ability to disguise the takedown.

Years ago GSP claimed the fight never happened because they didn’t want to give him enough time to properly bulk up. Now it’s this laundry list of excuses. Which was it?? GSP ducked Silva.

I think GSP beats Anderson by a boring decision regardless of weight. 5 lbs isn’t going to make that much difference. Thales Leites, Travis Luther, Nate Marquardt and Yushin Okami all took Anderson down. Of course Cormier, Sonnen, Henderson and Weidman did too but they are way more accomplished wrestlers than the first list.
The 170 lber ducked the 185 lber?

IMO a lighter champion isn’t ducking a heavier champion. I’m consistent, I don’t agree with the assertion that Anderson ducked Jones even though Anderson actually fought twice (one of them a former Champ) at 205.

At that point in Anderson’s & GSPs career they had both cleaned out their division. This is prize fighting right? That was by far the most lucrative fight GSP could’ve had at the time PPV points wise.
We’ve seen countless other champions move up to fight the champions a weight higher. BJ Penn, McGregor, Poatan, Topuria, Islam. GSP just didn’t have that dog in him. Then he ducked the rest of the MW division after beating Bisping, when he claimed beforehand he’d defend the title if he won it. He cherry picked that matchup.
Jones had cleaned out his division too. Many times over. It would have been the biggest money fight for them too. Silva said they were friends, he didn’t want to move to that division permanently, and one time…….just out of respect he didn’t want to fight Jones.
Again, neither of the smaller fighters ducked a heavier champ. If anything, Anderson is worse than GSP because he actually DID move up multiple times and didn’t challenge Jones. But I don’t see it that way for either of them.
He did move up and fight DC though, that’s a pretty wild matchup to take a weight class up. I get where you’re coming from. Anderson even offered to go to 170 to fight GSP at one point though, and the matchup still didn’t come together. We’ll just have to agree to disagree I guess. Maybe I’m just a little jilted, because we didn’t get to see that legendary matchup. It should’ve happened one way or the other IMO.
