Guns N Roses - Whisky a Go Go live - May 1986

Had never seen this before, didn’t know it existed.
Full show and for some historical placement, this is just after they signed the contract with Geffen, a few months before the Live like a Suicide EP and six months before they started properly recording Appetite for Destruction which released a year after this show in July 1987.
Interesting to see Don’t Cry and Back off Bitch already in the setlist.
Amazing time capsule of the band before their fame exploded.

My uncle was at the 1988 live at the ritz in NY

He said it was rawest roughest concert he’s ever been to - dudes shooting up in bathrooms, fights, stabbings, people fucking in crowd - just out of control

Apparently one of the first songs they wrote, even before a lot of the appetite material

Yeah it’s interesting how long some of the Use Your Illusion songs were around. Tracii Guns said there was a version of November Rain around in 83-84 with the original Guns N Roses band (Tracii and Axl). and Slash has said they recorded an 18min version in 86 which I guess would be around the same time as this live show.

You Could Be Mine was another one like that. The chorus is on the inner lining of the album (Appetite).

“With your bitch slap rappin and your cocaine tounge.”

At least I remember that being in there.

Thought this was cool.
Hanoi Rock Michael Monroe joined them on Bad Obsession with his harmonica. Although it’s credited to someone else it’s long been known it was him that played on the original Use Your Illusion recording of the song.

Apparently my Youtube algorithm wants to reveal GNR stuff I haven’t seen before now. Sure, why not.

Someone recently finally uploaded the legendary House of Blues show on 1/1/2001 which was Axl’s first appearance with the new band. Featuring the debut of Chinese Democracy songs and Axl in Chinese silk pyjamas, even though the album would be another 7years away from release. Weird to see him still looking young here.
Slash was in the audience and Axl had him removed by security before he’d start the show lol

This and the Ritz show are time machine moments.

Not really… If I remember correctly, ‘Don’t Cry’ was largely written before Gn’R came together and was one of the first songs the band wrote.

I assume he’s referring to the sunset demos that for a long time were incredibly hard to find. (I got my copy in Japan.) They’ve since released them on the Appetite box set and there’s two versions. One is just piano and Axl, the other acoustic guitar and Axl. Both are great in a stripped down raw way, but the song in both forms is far from the complete version from the Illusion album.

Fixed it for you… But you are correct.

I graduated in '84. Looking back, considering my core group of friends and the shit we DID do, I really do not understand how in the hell we never took a few weeks during the summer of '84, 85, or 86 and drove out to L.A. to see the music scene in person.

I’m the only one of that core group still alive, though, so can’t ask them :-/
