SEG filed a lawsuit against the International Fighting Championship (IFC) for copyright and trademark infringement after the IFC’s debut event, IFC 1: Kombat in Kyiv, which took place on March 30, 1996, in Ukraine. The early mixed martial arts (MMA) promotion, founded by Andy Anderson and Buddy Albin, aggressively utilized unauthorized imagery and intellectual property closely belonging to the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), which was owned by Semaphore Entertainment Group (SEG) at the time. The IFC created an event logo that heavily copied the design and branding of the UFC logo. The official event poster prominently featured major UFC superstars, including Oleg Taktarov and Dan Severn, and advertised a “Superfight” between Taktarov and Scott Bessac. In reality, these fighters were simply asked to participate but never actually agreed, and the advertised matches never took place. Iconic UFC referee “Big John” McCarthy was also placed on the event poster without permission and declined to participate. SEG’s legal team took immediate action against the unauthorized use of their intellectual property. The promoters were forced to black out sections of the copied logo on the ring canvas during the live event broadcast to mitigate legal damages. ---

According to firsthand accounts from those involved in the event, including co-founder Andy Anderson and referee “Big John” McCarthy, the tournament was heavily entangled with local Ukrainian organized crime, who controlled the venue and wanted ownership of the lucrative live broadcast tapes. As the event drew to a close, Albin realized the local mob intended to seize all the profits and the master tapes. He packed the event’s cash gate revenue into bags and quietly slipped away from the arena before the final bouts concluded. Albin and a small crew rushed directly to the airport, escaping Ukraine on a flight to Paris, France, leaving the rest of the American production crew and fighters behind to deal with the fallout. With the promoters gone, the local mafia surrounded the hotel where the American production staff and fighters were staying, demanding the broadcast tapes. The crew only managed to escape safely by surrendering duplicate tapes to the mob while smuggling the actual master recordings out of the country. ---
