B Team is a lot different than New Wave. John is a genius but he runs a cult. How dark the cult gets may or may not ever be public knowledge.
B-Team is a little too unprofessional for my liking but it’s a good room. They have a better vibe as a team where New Wave and the old DDS were like a bunch of peons vying for John’s attention and love. B Team attracts more hobbiest hipster fags who do BJJ because they listen to Rogan’s podcast, but they split the room in half into a “pros” and “civilians” side so people who are good and don’t want to fuck with hobbiests don’t have to.
I’m seriously considering moving to Austin for a year just to be able to train there twice a day. Nicky Ryan is a great coach when he’s not fat and injured, Nicky and Jay Rod were both good rolling partners when I was there. Nicky fucked me up obviously but he was never injurious or reckless.
It has its short comings but it’s not nearly as toxic as I thought it might be when I went there.
You may be right, but in my experience you can never tell with a visit or initial perceptions. When shit goes down at gyms there’s always students who “had no idea”.
Also for the record I always thought Greg and Paulson were bang on with how they handled Brock. Brock was going to react poorly to getting hit and them protecting his confidence is the only reason he made it as far as he did. You can’t take a 30-something year old on his 4th athletic career and suddenly make him react well to hard shots, not when he’s already in the UFC.
They knew that Brock was no kickboxer. Even at the U of MN he wasn’t exactly a technical wrestler. I talked to a few coaches there about it and they made it clear that Brock basically ran the training format. The details were left to the coaches, but he’d tell them what he wanted to work on.
It seemed like it was a thrill and frustrating at the same time to work with him.
some of my friends’ young daughters are hardcore into bjj/no gi gyms and competing
always traveling with male team members and instructors their age and older
1 of them constantly sends his daughter to do do privates with the male instructor and just does a drop off or waits in the parking lot dicking around on his phone
i never quite felt comfortable imagining me with a daughter in that scenario
Our gym has a policy that if there aren’t multiple people in the class the parents have to stay, even if they say they’d rather drop them off. Never heard a single good reason why other gyms don’t do this.
Only had to deal with anything once, and it was some 16 year old girl who’s mom was a crack head and she would leave her and come back hours after class was over. I’d hold focus mits for that girl for like 30 rounds in a row until her nutty ass mom would show up to pick her up. It was a 5:30 to 6:30 boxing class and this bitch would show up at like 9:30 to pick up her daughter
If I was a creep or that girl was a liar that could have gone very sideways.
We had a 15-16 year old girl that was a distraction. She would be trying to chat while coach was showing the drill. She never wanted to actually roll and said she was just there to socialize. We have a rule that the 15-17 year olds only roll with adults of the same sex, and she started trying to roll with the adult guys. All of us. We were really good about fending her off to one of the adult women, or one of the other kids. It got to a point where we told coach it was uncomfortable for us(which was like three classes) and he told her mom she wasn’t welcome anymore. That on top of being a distraction, she also couldn’t follow rules and he doesn’t need that in his gym. He said she took it well, and the mom said this wasn’t the first time she’s been asked to not be involved in an activity anymore.
yeah you gotta I think. I mean, if the guy is trying to better himself and do better its not fair for him to be blackballed. And if he gets his shit together he is a great addition to any team
To be fair, it could be one of these things where it’s safe when their assumed and simply out of mind, but when it’s out in the open, it strains relationships.

My gym used to cross train with another local gym who was strictly BJJ guys. The estrogen levels in that place was so high that you could get a contact buzz.
To be fair, while I do agree with @EdFetish that it’s kind of lame to say someone who doesn’t train in the gi is a BJJ person, his lineage is unquestionable.
Rolls → Carlos Jr → Renzo → Danaher → Ryan is about as legit as they come.
Nicky doesn’t hand out belts. Even when Jay won west coast trials he was still a blue I believe. Nicky was waiting until his guard and leg defense improved to bump him to purple, regardless of the fact he was trashing black belts in comp by then.
