Marco Ruas vs Paul Varelans | 9/8/95

Marco Ruas brought a bad-ass nickname “The King of the Streets” and a well-rounded Luta Livre skillset to his first UFC event. The Brazilian collided the 6ft 8inch ‘Polar Bear’ Paul Varelans in the tournament final and UFC 7 fight of the night

Ruas vs Varelans was my favorite fight back in the day. The Polar Bear was way tougher than he was ever given credit for. Too bad we never got to see Ruas vs Rickson.

I remember wincing st the 454th. Leg kick! Ouch.

Tank vs Ruas from that era would have been interesting.

It’s interesting how styles, body-types, and physical attributes really shape the fight game.

I think Ruas would have been favored over Tank, at least in my opinion. But I sure would like to see him fight Frye. I also would have loved to see some of those old hard training sessions he had with Bas, Rizzo and Aerts. It sounds like Ruas was just a total animal in the gym and just trained very hard and beat the shit out of people regularly.

I remember watching this live and the PPV feed cut out because they went over on time.

Didn’t find out who actually won for months.

Ruas would’ve leg kicked Tank to death IMO much like Rizzo did to Severn.

Tank would’ve had a field day with Varelans though.

Iirc they also ran out of air time for Coleman vs Maurice Smith and that was why they cut the lights late in the bout. I could be misremembering though. I know that they went over and cut the feed on at least a couple ppvs back in the day. I am also pretty sure I remember that my buddy ordered Bas vs Randleman live streaming from the UFC website and that was before internet speeds were worth a shit. I think he bought it for a reduced price vs what Direct TV or whomever carried it. We tried to watch this shit on his pc. The entire ppv crashed during the undercard and I don’t think he got any kind of refund. This was when we had to wait for tapes to be released by the local video store to keep up with the ufc most of the time.

That’s what I mean about styles making fights. I can see some people not being all that impressed by Ruas when Tank just bulldozed through Varelans in about 2 minutes and “tickled his brain” for shits and giggles, but then Ruas would be favored against Tank.

RIP to the Polar Bear.

Figured I’d put this here.

Don Frye really was the total package. He had the look, the voice, the charisma, the skills, the exciting fighting style, etc

He didn’t have the voice back then. Tank sat him on his ass with a jab. If tank hadn’t have slipped on a slick spot on the mat Don was fucked boxing.

Don was also the beginning of the steroid era.

should have had Joey Pants introduce him though

A few years ago I paid for a Cameo by Don Frye addressed to my team when we were deployed.

Absolutely bonkers and money well spent. He invited us to his house but we never could reach him back
