Conor McGregor’s chances of making it on the ballot for president of Ireland just got smaller.
In news that puts a knife in the heart of McGregor’s chances to become president during the October 24th Irish presidential election, ruling party Fine Gael has demanded that all 246 of their members on local councils refuse to nominate any independent candidates.
“As Fine Gael has a candidate in the Presidential Election, Fine Gael public representatives are only to nominate the Fine Gael candidate,” an instruction sent from the party to councilors read. “Fine Gael public representatives cannot in any way facilitate the nomination of any candidate other than the ratified Fine Gael candidate.”
“In the event of a vote at any local authority on the nomination of a person other than the ratified Fine Gael candidate, the Fine Gael local authority members are whipped to oppose that nomination.”
The move comes as 20 of the 31 councils are set to hold meetings to consider nominations for over a dozen independent candidates including Conor McGregor. The move did not make McGregor happy.
“This is a direct breach of democracy through the abuse of power and thus, a criminal action!” McGregor wrote on X (formerly Twitter). “A full misuse of authority! This situation must be challenged as an abuse of power, and warrants investigation by relevant authorities as well as review by the Standards in Public Office Commission.”
This is the second time Fine Gael – part of a coalition government that currently rules Ireland – has made moves that have blocked McGregor and other independents from having a chance at winning any power in Ireland. Earlier this year they scrapped plans to directly elect a mayor of Dublin, and concern that a candidate like McGregor could win were a key part of that decision.
Does this end McGregor’s chance of making it on the ballot? Not quite. Fine Gael members make up just 246 of the 941 councilors on these councils, and McGregor needs just 4 to secure a nomination. At this point, though, there has been no sign that the former UFC star had any support amongst councils before the edict came down. A quest for 20 parliamentarian nominations likewise seems hopeless.
‘Whipping’ party members to follow orders is common if not the standard in Irish politics. This is still a bad look for the country and one that makes it impossible to ignore the power the existing political establishment’s stranglehold on the democratic process. It’s the kind of thing that could actually backfire and whip up a strong wave of counter-support for McGregor that otherwise wouldn’t be there.
Let’s see how it plays out.

Hell yeah, I think Conor wins in Ireland. He may have his personal issues, but I do believe he genuinely cares about his people and Ireland

to be fiar although hew wont win, it woudl be amazing if he got buffer to announce his electoral results, And STILL..… President of Ireland…
