I signed up for a class āback in the dayā where Joe Charles was teaching. It was like a Wednesday night at a TKD school. I showed up, but was the only person there and he was kind of pissed so I got a āprivateā for like $20 (back in like 1997 or so). He was a big guy and OK with some of the things he showed me (canāt say anything bad about him), but the one thing I remember is he showed me that āLebellā grip. At the time he didnāt reference Lebell, but he showed me the āgrab your other hand and put the thumb between your index and middle finger (not the thumb and index)ā pretty cool and only found out from this podcast it was from Lebell.
Rolled one time with Gokor and it was a joke. I could do nothing. I started in his guard and he just played with me like a toy, lol. This is when Karo and Manny were basically kids rolling on their own in the corner by themselves as they were so good. There was one guy there that was in the class at Gokorās that only had one arm that I rolled with (not sure if that rings a bell)?
Man the 90ās in LA was fucking amazing time for NHB (before they started calling it MMA).
