Another great episode. Peretti would be such an interesting JRE guest given that history but I feel like the environment between them would get hostile and it makes me appreciate how Mike and Joey can “wrangle” lol a guest like him so well to everyone’s benefit

Peretti is fascinating and one of the best commentators the sport has ever seen - I so wish he was there commentating the Tuivasa fight Saturday night .. he would shit all over it and it would have been well deserved

the part where jp was certain 20’ tall human giants existed…. was way out there

Scientific evidence does not support the historical existence of a race or species of human giants

. While myths, legends, and conspiracy theories often suggest otherwise, no, there is no, no,. The tallest verified human, Robert Wadlow, stood 8 feet 11 inches tall, but this resulted from a medical condition (gigantism) rather than a giant species.

Key Findings:

  • Biological Limits: The square-cube law dictates that as a human increases in size, their mass grows much faster than their bone strength, making a species of giant humans biologically unviable.

  • Misidentified Bones: Many historical reports of “giant skeletons” were actually misidentified prehistoric animal bones or simply average-sized humans, according to Smithsonian scientists.

  • Extinct Giants: Gigantopithecus blacki, an extinct primate, stood up to 10 feet tall but was a distinct species, not a human, and existed alongside prehistoric apes.

  • Cultural Myths: Legends of giants often stemmed from ancient people discovering large mammal fossils (like mastodons or prehistoric elephants) and interpreting them as human remains.

Tallest Documented Humans:

  • Robert Wadlow: 8 feet 11 inches (

something else for @MMAHistoryPodcast

Maybe he is talking about the old maps that had giants on them

John Perretti returns to the MMA History Podcast for a deep dive into his transition from Extreme Fighting to the UFC and the turbulent early years that followed. The Gene LeBell black belt and key architect of modern mixed martial arts details the rapid call from the UFC just days after Battlecade closed, the challenges of matchmaking under Japanese financing and political pressures, and the uphill battle to implement gloves, weight classes, rounds and structured rules into a spectacle-driven promotion.

From the controversial UFC Japan card and suspected works to booking future stars including Chuck Liddell, Dan Henderson and Carlos Newton, Perretti recounts hostile environments, referee tensions, tournament formats he opposed, and the moment five-minute rounds and the ten-point must system finally arrived at UFC 21.
