How far back does Pancrease go? Shooto?
Wasn’t there some sort of no rules fights in the 70s around the Pittsburgh area?
Pancrase early 90’s, Shoot late 80’s I think.
Yeah, some tough man stuff combined with no rules. Remember seeing some YouTube vid on this.
There are a bunch of Vale Tudo vs BJJ videos from Brazil doing NHB in the 80’s.
Not very man matches in 70’s I know of and none in the 60’s I know of.
I guess the Lebel fight was in the 50’s?
Pancrase started in September of 1993, about 2 months prior to the UFC. Shooto was started in 1985 and was the first mma organization.
Watch the documentary, toughguys. It’s a good one, they were far from the first though, the first decade of the 20th century was the first jiujitsu and nhb boom, bigger than the one 90 years later
This is the p.m magazine piece from 79
60’s for the lebell, 1963-12-2
American boxer Sam mcvey vs an English blue belt enforcer going by the name of tano matsuda. Englishman was a student of count koma and ono at their London academy , his professional name was the last names of famous jiujitsu fighters. Mcvey thought he was fighting the famous yukio tani, and fully expected to die, but decided to go to his fate with decorum, when he spied his opponent he was overjoyed to discover that it wasn’t tani, and wasn’t even Japanese, so he just hastened forwards quickly and cold cocked the little limey in 10 seconds
