Well MMA can get pretty homoerotic so it’s only natural.

They probably just beat off to the BJJ portions of the fights.

My personal favorite was this:

The bigger problem, and arguably the most important question, is whether the hierarchical and meritocracy-based institution, being the contender ranking system, could ever produce a left-wing mindset.

An open acknowledgement that leftists cant survive in a system based on strength and competency

Politics, MMA: UFC fighters lean right out of necessity | Opinion

(This story first appeared on FSView, a part of the USA TODAY Network.)

It is no secret that the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), the pinnacle of mixed martial arts organizations, leans strongly right-wing both institutionally and among its individual participants.

Dana White, the CEO and president of the organization, is a close friend of President Donald Trump and has personally endorsedhim at the 2024 Republican National Convention (RNC), while individual fighters like Sean Strickland and Josh Hokit are very open about their advocacy for conservative social beliefs.

Understanding why most fighters tend to be right-wing is a complex but intuitive journey: In part due to the fact that a majority of them tend to grow up lower-class, were raised on the idea of pulling themselves up by the bootstraps and aren’t educated on the benefits of welfare and social safety nets.

These three factors together create a strong conservative mindset.

The bigger problem, and arguably the most important question, is whether the hierarchical and meritocracy-based institution, being the contender ranking system, could ever produce a left-wing mindset.

I’d argue that the way mixed martial arts rankings exist disallows a pro-egalitarian mindset, instead requiring that fighters think in a shark-eat-shark mindset in order to survive.

Ranking system

For the sake of the example, look at the UFC’s ranking system. Each weight class has a champion, and numbered contenders ranking from 1-15 on a list where 1 is closest to fighting the champion, and 15 is the furthest.

There are other fighters outside the top 15, but they’re all equally unranked.

In this system, every fighter wants to be the champion of their weight class and, therefore, wants to defeat the other fighters in the weight class. If this is the case, what reason would any fighter have to help another fighter in their weight class?

The way the system works, you’d be helping someone essentially take your livelihood. If they improve, and they end up fighting you, losing could be the difference between paying bills and going into debt.

Because of this, a fighter is trained to look at people not as those looking to achieve a common goal, but as competition that should provide the least amount of opportunities possible.

The biggest difference in a single-person ranking system for a sport like tennis is that you can afford to have a bad day. Professional tennis players play anywhere between 50 and 70 matches a year. On the other hand, professional fighters only fight between one and three times a year.

That is what makes the fighting mindset so different. In the very few opportunities you have to make money, someone is attempting to take half your purse, and having empathy for the fact that they’re trying to make a living on their end could get you both physically beaten and financially.

People vs. fighters

A rational person can understand that just because you have a meritocracy-based system for work doesn’t mean you have to apply the same mindset to policy. Unfortunately, it seems that fighters don’t draw that line.

Fighters like Colby Covington see taxation, in all forms, as a form of theft, including when having to give it to others. Mixed martial artist Chuck Liddell commented that the UFC is not a welfare state and therefore you shouldn’t expect handouts.

This is a common theme among fighters, but it’s a scary image to present. It seems that fighters like Covington or Lidell have a disdain for people who require welfare, especially when they use it to demean fighters.

Once the idea of welfare being theft or unfair is embedded in the head of a fighter, it isn’t easy to remove. It would require, firstly, that they’re open to the idea of being wrong, but how likely is that?

They’ve spent their entire life succeeding by not listening to people; they have no reason to start now. This is especially true when you realize that anyone they may trust to speak to shares their exact ideology.

If you’re in a room with 100 people who agree with you and someone outside that room tries to tear you away from the collective experience to make a point, there will likely be very little reception.

Fighters are conservative at heart

In the same way that the majority of environmentalists in Boston are going to be socially progressive, it is likely just another fact of the matter that fighters are going to be conservative.

The way they grew up, and the way they must think to survive, ensures that any possibility of a pro-welfare and progressive fighter is extremely low.

However, as politics shift during Trump’s second term, there is always a chance to find a crack in the armor of a headstrong belief.
