I don’t recall if the limit is 999 but at least hypothetically, I was about to swing for over 8k when he quit.
If I get my EDH Urza deck going, its a beast. This guy was playing Boros Angels and had me down to 3 life. He was around 36 life, I think. But I got Portal to Phyrexia in play, then started using Urza’s ability to make a copy each turn to board-wipe him. I kept stealing his Healer’s Hawk over & over as a blocker until he conceded.
Just downloaded MTG:A.
I suck at creating decks (too many fucking cards to consider and possibly add).
Usually just play with the premade decks through the events.
Currently playing the “Jump In!” event with a zombie bats deck (black/white).
If you PM me your user name, I’ll be glad to help out. I’ve been playing since the mid-90’s.
I love Phyrexia/Eldrazi decks. I’m definitely going to build one as soon as I’m patient enough to save a boatload of Mythic and Rare wildcards.
I’m a huge fan of Phyrexians. They were the arch-villain when I started playing (Tempest block), so I’ve always had a soft spot for them. I’m infuriated with how the Phyrexian storyline was wrapped up, though. That was total bullshit.
I mean, the premise was good: The Phyrexians are invading the multiverse and have “compleated” some of the games most iconic characters like Ajani, Jace, and Vraska… but then the Phyrexians are beat far too conveniently, and those that were compleated were miraculously healed (though many of them lost their “planeswalker” spark). The end.
That was BULLSHIT! To eliminate MTG’s longest-standing enemy over the course of 1 block after a story that has spanned DECADES was a travesty!
Moving right along, I’ve retooled my Elemental Graveyard deck… Mossborn Hydra is a beast! It is arguably better than Primordial Hydra!
Elementals are just SICK! I prefer Sultai (Black, Green, Blue) but a lot of people like Temur (Blue, Red, Green) because of Omnath. I’ve just never been that big on Omnath, so Sultai is my jam!
I think this deck could still do with some tweaking, but I like the direction it’s going once I decided to retool it with the latest cards. As I said in my post above, Mossborn Hydra is just fucking SICK! I pulled off the 1024/1024 in a single turn…
Risen Reef + Yarok, the Desecrated + Mossborn Hydra
Oh yeah. I love Mossborn Hydra. It’s much better than its predecessor. That’s what I used above. Had he not quit, it would have been 8,192/8,192 Trample. lol
I can play ten-plus lands in a turn with that deck. I have gone from 1/1 to one-shot KO in a single turn many times, and it never gets old.
Was down 10-20, gained a few life using Yarok as a chump blocker, then let Risen Reef do it’s thang!
Got involved playing “Portal” in the mid 90s.
Fucking loved it and got all my friends to play it. We used to get high/drunk and play for hours. Collected every Portal card and had them in a binder. Started building decks and was loving it!
Figured I’d expand and bought a few card packs outside of portal (don’t ask me which ones). I was so fucking confused by what I saw that I immediately went back to playing Portal LOL.
Loving this app though. Getting the hang of all the shit that is offered outside the regular abilities.
Any general tips on building a deck?
I started one of the events (Duskmourn Quick draft) and it was giving me a bunch of cards to pick to build a deck. Tried to stick to two colors but then was presented with a bunch of cards that didn’t align with my colors.
Went back to playing the other shit LOL.
Just want to play the game; don’t want to spend a lot of brain power working through decks as I don’t have the bandwidth for that.
In any case, any general tips would be appreciated.
Considering how long it’s been since you’ve played, it’s hard to recommend because there are so many different strategies…
Let’s start with this… what kind of deck do you think you’d prefer?
-
Burn - Fireballs & LIghtning Bolts. Cause “direct damage” to your opponents and their creatures.
-
Control - lock your opponent down, prevent them from playing their cards or using them once they’re in play.
-
Stompy - Big creatures that get bigger… and BIGGER!
-
Combo - decks that rely on combinations of cards to create a win-con. Some are somewhat simple, others get rather complicated.
Also, would you consider yourself someone who just wants to win? Or are you someone who really enjoys how the cards interact?
When you played Portal, was it the original Portal or was it the Chinese-themed Portal Three Kingdoms? The original Portal cards are mostly worthless, but the Chinese-themed Portal Three Kingdom cards have a number of pricey ones!
No idea, how would I know the difference?

Prefer combo/control.

Also, would you consider yourself someone who just wants to win? Or are you someone who really enjoys how the cards interact?
The latter. I love to see when cards chain off of one another.
For example, was playing one of the quick decks the other day that had rabbits involved. One card was this rabbit that would create a few 1/1 rabbits for every one of those cards you had in play.
Long game and was getting clobbered. Ton of those rabbit cards in my graveyard.
Pull a card that brings creatures back from me graveyard with less than 2 power. Triggers this massive avalanche of those rabbit cards and ended up with like 30 1/1 rabbits on the board or something absurd.
Despite only having a few health left I swarm-fucked my opponent with a ton of shitty rabbits and stomped him.
Dude must have been pissed as he had me on the ropes LOL
You’ll get up to speed without much issue just from playing. There’s an option to play Bot matches while you’re getting your deck(s) setup. One thing that is very different from the 90’s game is you have to be cognizant of win conditions. You can’t simply focus on basic creatures any more. There was a time when a 6/4 wurm with no abilities could win you the game with a little help. It doesn’t work that way any more.
You’ll need to find a dynamic or combo you enjoy and build a deck around that. It doesn’t have to be perfect, and you don’t have to have all the Mythic cards that work with it to win. I would focus on the daily challenges to earn gold and cards then use the gold to buy packs. The Midweek Magic events are free, so you should always do those. Until you are more proficient, I wouldn’t spend resources on the paid events.
As you play, keep an eye on the cards and combos you see. When you see something you like, take a screen shot. From there, focus on synergies you can build with common and uncommon cards. You won’t have a lot of rare/mythic wildcards for a while. The wildcards are what you use to unlock a card of the corresponding rarity. Also, there are a ton of codes out there for free goodies. That will net you a dozen or more free packs.
lol. @Khun_Kao loves that card.

Which one, the rabbit one or the cast from graveyard one?
