Sam has already come out and said this wasn’t the ref’s fault and that he told him before the match that he can take a beating, and not to stop it too early.

He pretty much told the ref if he is able to stand, he’s still in it. It’s 100% not the ref’s fault.
I don’t know. The ref is there to protect the fighter. Not allow him to dictate how much he can take

It is though. If he says “I’ll be fine”, then it’s his say.
This isn’t some scrub in his first fight. This is an MMA veteran defending his title as double champ. I’m for title fights having a bigger threshsold for stoppage to begin with. Then if the title holder says “Hey. I’m ok taking a beating” then let him have it.

It’s not his say, I mean you can tell the ref that you can take a beating so don’t stop it early, but that doesn’t mean he can’t stop the fight until some one is unconscious
well if he let Sam die in there he would have achieved “don’t stop it early”. If he let the guy wail on him for 10 minutes after he died………still all good because he didn’t stop it early.

Yes, in reality, it shouldn’t matter what the fighter says to the ref before the fight.
The referee should ref all the fights with the exact same parameters.

He’s been fighting for 20 years. I doubt this will have any extra impact on his mental faculties.
I think there should be a little more leeway in huge title fights. This was a title fight in an unknown org.

Part of the refs job is protecting the fighter from themselves. What Sam says doesn’t excuse the ref failing their responsibility
