The OnlyGround Extended Fasting Thread

Per request - lets resurrect this thread, and get some OnlyGround tags on some users with some new fasts!

If you’re new and are idly curious how this all works, start reading at GENERAL RULES below. I’ll try to update once posters start jumping in. Fasts over 72h will make the Wall of Lean.

GENERAL RULES FOR THOSE WHO WANT TO JOIN - by mataleo1 :

-Before fasting: try cutting carbs to a minimum 48h before fasting, it’ll make fasting easier.
-Here what is allowed: water, tea, coffee.
-No need for supplements or vitamins or anything the first 2 weeks. If you sweat a lot, you can use a small cup of broth every day.
-The first 3 days are the WORST. Be prepared. But if you can make through this, it’s really easy afterwards. Neither Stache nor I have had problems with hunger or cravings after day 3.
-Do not exercise the first 3 days, as your body is transitioning from sugar to fat as energy source.

UPDATE

In the interest of providing guidelines here, and to make this simple and generalizable for everyone, here goes. I’m also going to take a more conservative approach than previously because it’s summertime and some will sweat and exercise, and I’d rather suggest taking more than less. I looked everything up and confirmed with the Jason Fung book. I personally fasted for 9 days with a little milk and no added sodium.

Do not do it if you’re pregnant or a diabetic on insulin.

Fast = MAX 14 days. You could do it longer but you would need extra coaching and additional info.

1st week: no food, just water (2-3 L per day). Coffee and tea are allowed.

IF: you exercise, work outside, take blood pressure pills, add 1gm of sodium per day

2nd week: no food, water (2-3 L per day). Coffee and tea are allowed. Preferably, especially if you exercise, you also need: sodium (1-2g per day), potassium (1-2g per day), magnesium (2-300mg per day). Salted homemade bone broth will do the trick (use sea salt). Or Oxo with K / Mg supplements.

Again, this is likely overkill for a 14 day fast, but it won’t interrupt the fast or the fat burning and will make it more palatable.

Simply put:
-It works: you’ll lose 4-6 lbs per week (more the first week because of excess water losses)
-It’s remarkably easy after the 3rd day
-It’s cheap (obviously)

Those who embark, it would be awesome if you could post:
-Daily weight
-Blood pressure (if you have high BP)
-Waist circumference
-Symptoms

I think I’ll do a 3 day this weekend. I’m enjoying lifting heavy too much so we shall see. What’s the conclusion on max fast benefit where the returns diminish for autophagy and whatnot? 3 or 5 days?

Never tried it before.

So basically don’t eat anything for a week, just drink water, tea and coffee?

Seems like it would be stupidly difficult, especially if you workout.

I do BJJ/MMA 3-4 times a week (normally at night). When I get home, I have a zero carb protein shake since it’s so close to bed.

I would think that should be the least folks should do, no?

Curious about fasting never tried it or even wanted to, so attempting to do 48 hours as a start to see how I handle it.

Fuck 25 hours in and I’m hungry, wouldn’t say I’m too bad of a fatty, 6’0 210 lbs and maintain a decent cardio routine I’d say, but I’m fighting my willpower to keep from eating.

I’ve only had water, a cup of coffee for lunch, and now tea for supper.

I did run 3.5 miles today though, should I not of?

You’re fine to do it for a day or two but extended fasts you’ll probably want to just stick with a walk or something not too strenuous.

The first 48-72h sucks ass, there’s no way around it especially the first time. After 72h it’s much easier. Id recommend if you go 48 you might as well try to get a full 3-5 days in since you already got through most of the shitty part.

Yeah I definitely feel better today, well as in not craving food so bad, I’m tired and maybe a slight on edge but definitely feel like getting past 48 hours wont be a problem.

If you do keto for at least 3 days before a fast it can make the first couple of days more manageable or not an issue as you burn through your glycogen stores and your body isn’t as aggressive at telling you it needs more once depleted. I believe that’s how it works. I just always did it that way and didn’t have that difficult first couple of days.

Better to do Keto beforehand rather than just low calories. I typically watch my calories during the week (1600-2500 calories with running) and did that Monday and Tuesday before fasting.

Usually that equates to lower carbs but obviously not always as if I was just watching carbs

Anyway to avoid the flu-type symptoms? Does everyone experience that? I weigh ~155 and don’t need to lose any weight.

I’ve done IF in the past and some “Monk Fast” all day fasts, but did a 4 day fast this last week, which is the longest I’ve done. After a couple of days, I felt the food cravings dissipate. But I was taking one of my sons out to dinner before he had some dental surgery the next day, and broke my fast a few hours before on the 4th day. I’d lost 11.5 lbs. I had some eggs and oatmeal to break the fast, along with some fruit (blueberries and bananas) tossed in the oatmeal.

About an hour after that, I stood up and got very light-headed, so I had to grab the table to keep from maybe toppling over and passing out. I sat down for a bit, than experienced the same thing. I laid down for a while, and suddenly felt really fatigued. About 2 hours after that, I finally felt okay and safe to drive.

Any thoughts on what caused that? I’m guessing maybe too many carbs, too fast, which may have affected my blood sugar. Maybe I should have started lighter with some broth, then later some protein. Any advice would be appreciated. Other than the pretty scary lightheadedness, it was a good experience that I plan to repeat for a longer period.
