THE SMASHING MACHINE: Emily Blunt Rock Johnson

just listened to one of my movie nerd pods talk about this movie…

interesting listening to people so outside of any athletic endeavor talk about the story being told while expecting typical movie outcomes…

The Chicago Tribune gave it a good review and praised Bader’s performance, saying they wish he was in the movie more.

I’m kind of annoyed the didn’t cast some short stocky dude as Igor, but on the flip side, you almost have to cast some big scary looking goon to have that play well on screen.

Normies, and modern era fans simply aren’t going to grasp how destructive that guy was, at 5’9, 200 something pounds with shoes on. Literal fucking wrecking ball of a man, who in peak shape, was like 185 pounds, but he spent 95 percent of his career at HW and broke dudes in half with punches.

Guy could have fought at 170, and instead was knocking giant human beings dicks into the dirt.

Junkies have to be the least compelling people to hear about ever. Insufferable assholes

Also, who tf did Kerr ever beat he didn’t have an overwhelming physical and ped advantage over? When did he not fold when he wasn’t a dominant weight bully? He’s probably the most overrated dude of early mma

this really shouldn’t be the story it is.

also the documentary was bullshit in how it was presented. All we see is the girlfriend freaking out because she’s dealing with a scummy dope fiend on A daily basis but they make it seem like she’s abusive and he’s a victim. Bullshit portrayal.

Igor wasn’t built much different than some of the guys he destroyed, but Igor is Igor.

Corrected.

this is why the Fujita casting upset me so much

they got legit fighters to play fighters, and then chose a chubby stuntman to play one of the most badass Japanese motherfuckers of his era

I’m going to go watch it this week. I’ll go to a matinee by myself or something. I planned on watching it, but I couldn’t remember when it premiered in theaters. Now that I see it’s out, and especially after reading many of the reviews on here, I’ll go this week. Thank you everyone.

Varlens also was terrible. I think Bader is great but Coleman is intensity at level 11 at all times. Didn’t get that from him. I also hated the score. I found the shitty jazz distracting at several points in the movie.

Also, I wanted to see Ricco. That was the real highlight from the documentary and everyone knows it.

I really love that they got Usyk in this movie. Also, he threw a spinning kick that was not bad at all.

Varelans casting seemed like they just asked a member of the crew if they wanted to have a cameo in the movie

Anyone else find it actually sad to see Bas and Quandros together, but The Fight Professor is like your great grandpa? Bas is awesome but he’s not the same energetic show stealing ham anymore. I felt like what was missing was some of the raw intensity and fucking insanity we got with early mma.

I didn’t think it was very good at all. It just rehashes the documentary which makes the acting seem awkward. Unnecessary.

You’d think they could find some tall 20-something football player to play Varelans. The documentary is much more effective. There’s no need to see this film if you’ve seen the doc.

Saw it yesterday and was gonna post this exactly.

If you watched the documentary, there’s no reason to see the movie.

Edit to add the one thing I found interesting was when Pride him $3,300.

I was always under the impression Pride paid a lot more than ufc, which is why all the heavyweights were going over there.

I think it’s great that the Rock fought to get this thing made but it just wasn’t necessary.

Well in one way, this story would never have been heard by the general public without this movie. Now that there’s been a significant separation in terms of time, the story is novel and MMA is well known to the general public.

Kerr in an interview said he was on salary for a period of time. They stopped it at one point and he had to take some pro wrestling gigs in Japan for extra $.

I m inclined to think its less about rock giving a shit about mark Kerr’s story, and really just an actor trying to find a plausible role that can win him and award and change his reputation
