Actually, you can LOSE the Tour in that first week, in flat stages. Falls, losses such as today (not fatal yet but still). But indeed, the high mountain stages are the difference makers.

Yesterday the winner finished in 3h53 (about the time I bang my GF daily)
For 184.9 km! The average speed was insane.
He had 71 km/h average speed in the last KM! That’s crazy tempo. Sprinters used to reach 70km/h for the sprint part, not the whole km!

Yea, that’s over 29 mph average and over 44 mph in the last 600 feet.
I read somewhere that to be a pro-rider at the level of TdF you have to be able to pedal at 25 mph on a flat surface and be able to comfortably carry on a conversation with someone riding next to you. Were I to try that for even a mile my lungs would pop out of my chest like an alien.

I once sprinted to catch a hot young gal who was doing sprints and then slowing down. I really had to go hard to catch her, but my breathing was normal. I think it’s only time my cardio was a flirting tool ha ha. We hit it off and chatted for a few minutes as we came upon a race that was starting.
It turns out she was warming up for a race coming up, and looking her up on my cellphone while she joined the start line, she was an 18 yo state champion and THE star of the event! I didn’t bang her nor even date her, not even seen her again (snif), but that day I got all kinds of perks at the event, even held out the trophy she won. I was older than her dad, present there too ha ha. A big ego boost, even if I got no sex, not even a kiss. Great and sad at the same time LOL
