I watched this event with my dad (only mma event we ever watched together) . He told me he thought this thing was niche and would never catch on. lol

Why would a guy like Gerry Harris enter the ufc? I mean, he’s a big guy and a bit older and he’s primarily a karate guy.. there were enough ufcs at that point to realize that guys like him would not do well in that type of format

You had that Ryan guy in this tournament too - another karate guy.. wtf were these guys thinking?!?

UFC 7 was a very weak tournament overall - Ruas was elite obviously but the rest were weak. Did bigger name fighters bow out at the last minute or something? I remember Igor Vovchanchin was set to make his debut at ufc 10 I think but had visa issues

That was the first UFC ppv I ever ordered live. I think I ordered Battlecade EF 1 a week lor two after. Anyway, thanks for the memories.

Wasn’t Ruas already hyped up before his UFC debut and made an appearance at an earlier UFC to announce his arrival?

The tournament was probably set up for Ruas to excel.

It didn’t have the big names some others did but it was still exciting back then. Most cards were.

Key takeaways from this one:

Hall’s choice of crowd salute

RIP Harold Howard’s goatee

Repeated use of the term “sucking (g)as”

Paul Varelans was a tough dude. Granted, he was huge but he had minimal training in there with legit MMA legends.

I don’t remember how they announced his arrival but I do seem to recall them making a big deal about him. Wouldn’t be surprised if they did intend for the tournament to favor him.

I love the look of disbelief on Ruas’ face when Remco taps after being mounted.

I remember watching it at a bar and when Ruas first came out people were like “Who’s this fag in the speedo?” and I said watch, this dude’s gonna take it all.

People wanted to bet me and I cleaned house.

First well rounded guy I can remember. Solid striking stills and submission game.

He did a brief ringside interview with him (and his translator) at the UFC prior to this one. They gave him one of those garish bullshit undefeated records to pump him up, too, like he was 150-0 or something.

He’s Brazilian. This is the way.

He was almost right. Pretty close to dying at one point.

Paul Varlens did pretty well in this tournament. So physically imposing
