UFC 121: Lesnar vs. Velasquez was a mixed martial arts event held by the Ultimate Fighting Championship on October 23, 2010, at the Honda Center in Anaheim, …
Remember the fight well and how wrong I called it!
I favoured Cain to win if Lesnar couldn’t stop him in the first two rounds.
Never ever expected Cain to get a first round stoppage and dominate Brock like that.
Still blame Brock’s coach for his disastrous idea to have Cole Conrad as a sparring partner. How does a huge 6 foot 6 + 300lbs guy prepare you for someone like Cain Velasquez in an MMA fight?
Light heavyweights or even middleweights would of been much better preparation for a smaller heavyweight like Cain. Being smaller and quicker would have replicated Cain much better in the cage.
Not saying Brock would of won had he done that but he would likely have had a much better performance as a result.
I actually think this is a very good description of Cain’s fighting style. On top of his tangibles, it really set him apart from other heavyweights.
It just seemed like from the beginning, he knew exactly how to fight.
Kind of reminds me of how Fedor was. Aggressive, but patient and calculated. Fedor’s gift was timing. That guy could punch a meteor out of the sky after 1,000 years of celestial stagnancy.
But I don’t think anything would have truly prepared Brock for that onslaught. Cain was there to take his head off, and he did. I think Cain would always be a bad matchup for him, but I have always wondered how Brock would have fared if he was able to survive that.
I was watching an opera-trained female singer the other day, watching her modulate her voice using techniques. It’s a mixture of natural ability honed by technical training. Cain knew when to modulate, change mode. When to play defence, when to sit back and read and when to blast forward. Everything was a reaction to his opponent’s moves.
Like Cody ‘No IQ’ Garbrandt, on their best night they might have been the best ever but they never reigned as long as they should have (if length of reign was proportional to ability). Cody went from untouchable brilliance vs Cruz to fighting with his chin in the North Pole and his hands in the South Pole. With Cain it was a lot of injuries but then I think the losses to both Francis and Werdum were legit losses… both those guys are beasts and in the GOAT HW discussion.
Forgot how massive Brock is, bc Cain is a big Mexican, quite a big size difference. Guys like Brock tend to break if you can apply equal pressure, they grow up always being the Hammer and never the nail.
Oh sure like I said I don’t think it would of changed the result because Cain is such a beast and a much much better fighter.
But training wrestling with a fast, agile 6 foot middleweight would have been much better preparation for keeping Cain on the ground than a giant slower less agile 6 foot 6 + 300lbs Cole Conrad.
I think had he done that he would of been able to hold Cain down longer and survived to the 2nd or 3rd rounds perhaps and it would of been interesting to see what he could do there.
However as his cardio decreased I think Cain would of taken over and brutally finished him regardless.
I don’t know what Brock’s coaches were thinking especially having him charge at Cain like that in the opening seconds. I get that they thought they would try to overwhelm Velasquez but what was the plan B if that failed?
Brock would be exhausted and Cain would be all over him which is exactly what happened in the end. Great fight while it lasted though!
A buddy invited me to his house to watch this fight.I showed up with a case of beer, and he couldn’t order it because he didn’t pay his cable bill.
As a result everyone decided to go to Applebee’s to watch. I said I’m not spending any more money on beer. I asked them to get a seat on the patio, So all my buddies were at a patio table with a TV, I went inside and ordered a meal to go. Then I stood outside the patio, getting beers from my car and watching the fights with them that way.
