Was Ribieros point deduction with no warning a sign of things to come?

Saulo Ribeiro deserved to point deduction for that oil check.

If they nipped the eyepokes in the bud early in his career his fights look a lot different and he certainly has a few losses or DQs.
He is literally daring a ref to take a point and they haven’t done so yet even though he has landed dozens of them and many that change fight momentum.

Just like strikers always have to fear a wrestler’s takedowns and that changes up the entire strategy and mentality of the fight, Jones’s entire stand-up is predicated on the fear of an eye poke.

If I’m Tom Aspinall’s eye doctor, fighting Jon Jones is a red panty night BAY BEE

Jon’s going to do it early and often, to the point where he might get a point taken.

Fighters absolutely take advantage of dirty tricks because they are confident they’d get a warning.

Zero tolerance needs to be the way forward.

Agreed, this is the dumbest rule. I would assume the reasoning for stopping fence grabs with the hands is that they can help with preventing takedowns, getting up from the mat, or holding someone against the fence.

None of these are helped by your toes going into the fence. The foot isn’t like the hand and you can’t grab things in the same way. Toes are designed to grip the surface you are standing on, which means they will usually go through the gaps in the fence automatically when ever your foot is flat on it.

I swear I once read an interview with a ref that said someone could lose a toe if they had it in the fence, and the opponent came down hard on that leg.

It’s a bitch move but Aspinall should stay down after Jones eye pokes him. Jon’s been getting away with fighting dirty his entire career. Take his title and let him retire with a loss.

I liked the part when Pena and O’malley’s cornermen told them it was a “great round” and they did “perfect” after first rounds where they got obliterated.

The positive reinforcement culture has gotten out of hand.

It only works if the ref acknowledges it was a poke and stops the action. Has that ever happened with Jones?

Betting people must be waiting to hear corner advice for reasons such as this. Whenever it’s yes men, they’re gonna lose.

I figgered that was at least part of their logic and it is probably in the realm of possibility. But I don’t think it’s in the realm of probability, there are any number of fluke incidents just as likely that don’t get addressed.
I remember when I was a kid there was a guy pissed that they allowed hs kids to dunk because they could fuck up and hang a finger in the net. Yeah I guess. They could also catch a stray dick splinter diving on a wood floor too but they don’t ban that.

Could have been the same people that saw karate guys breaking ice with their elbows and made 12-6 elbows illegal cause they’re a kill shot.
