Wrench's Top 200 Western Movie Rankings

As a group of supremely masculine fellas, of course we have many fans of the Western genre. We did this thread a couple years ago, time for a reboot.

Here’s how it works…I have compiled a spreadsheet of several hundred western films. After reviewing dozens of “Top Western” lists, I have run formulas to come up with a master list of lists.

These are NOT NECESSARILY my top 200, but the top 200 as per all of the lists I’ve reviewed, shaken and stirred with formulas I’ve added to the data.

Some of you are gonna freak out that Tombstone is not #1. I don’t disagree that Tombstone is an exceptional part of the genre but it is not #1.

So without further ado, the updated, official, 2024 Wrench’s Top 200 Western movie rankings…

Lonesome Dove should rank like a movie - Top Five.

#1 - The Searchers - 1956

John Wayne and John Ford masterpiece. This is one for which I’d love to see a shot for shot remake with modern effects, actors (including actual Indians to play the Indians instead of the Trudeau-esque redface actors).

Famously brought this shot…

#2 - High Noon - 1952

Gary Cooper is the definition of masculinity in this film. His wife is played by Grace Kelly. So hot.

Anyway, while this film is number 2 on this list, it is my favorite western of all time.

#3 - Unforgiven - 1992

One of Clint’s MANY masterpieces on this list. So great. Gene Hackman and Morgan Freeman also star and are dynamite.

#4 - Once Upon a Time in the West

Fantastic Henry Fonda film wjere he takes a rare turn as the antagonist. Claudia Cardinale, smoke show, and Chrles Bronson also star.

I really enjoy this movie, although I feel it has flaws that other films after it on the list do not.

#5 - The Wild Bunch

Great flick about a bunch of wild west outlaws living in a time of transition from the old west, to modern, more orderly time. Highly recommend.

One of my personal top 3. I love this movie.

#7 - The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance - 1962

The second John Wayne flick on the list, and the first Jimmy Stewart (severely underrated western star because he is better known these days for other things).

Exceptional, underappreciated film.

#8 - The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly

Another Eastwood masterpiece amd the first spaghetti western to make the list. Another in my personal top 3 and too low on this list IMO (there are about 10 in my personal top 3 ).

So great. You’ve all seen this one for sure. If not, go watch it now. RFN.

#9 - Red River - 1948

Another John Wayne flick on the list. This really is a great movie. Not in my top 10, but every western fam should see it. It was better while watching it, than in my memory.
