Just got home from Comiccon not to long ago and figured I’d make my yearly post about it.
Less people in costumes this year although heavily manga inspired costumes (over 90% easily).
I saw maybe 5 in Star Trek costumes and outside of the 501st Legion raising money for charity maybe 10 in Star Wars outfits.
Marvel and DC took a shit kicking as I saw at most 12 people in super hero costumes and of the Harley Quinns I saw 2. Used to be easily 30 or more Harley Quinns in previous years.
Saw some Furries, more than I remember from previous years.
As for booths, there were more comic book booths than last year (6 or 7) but for retro toys there was almost nothing.
For my pickups I bought 2 sets of Battlestar Galactica complete sets (20 bucks total), about 20 comics missing from my list, 1 Stormtrooper figure to piss off my niece, and One Piece cards.
Easily the least amount I’ve spent at a Comiccon and the vast majority was One Piece cards.
Another thing I noticed is the booth selling the complete sets of movie cards were at a quarter of the price that was sold in the past. I remember sets going for 40 bucks now being sold for 10.
Lots of people attended though so I’m hoping the sellers did well sales wise.
Hasbro has a Con exclusive 3-pack of Marvel Legends figures that I want. Actually I only want one of the figures in that 3 figure set but won’t be able to since it’s a Con exclusive.
Only 1 person I walked by smelled off. No booth babes this year. I don’t remember there being any last year either. I remember one year where there was a blonde dressed as Power Girl
She was pissed that one of the comic nerds was staring at her tits and she was vocal about it. I didn’t say anything but in my head I was thinking that “you’re wearing an outfit with your tits exposed and your pissed that a recluse is looking at your tits”.
Denver fan expo is this weekend too. I picked up a limited editon print by scott snyder, got an autographed print from the guy who does invincible. I think im going to pull the trigger on a batman beyond animation cel tomorrow. Definitely spent less this year compared to pass years, but i do t have space for a bunch of new prints
I think it means western properties are dying/dead. I’ve spoken before how I feel this was done deliberately. Whether Marvel or DC (heavy pushes to make them LGBTQ properties and destroy the more popular “conservative” characters like the Punisher), Star Wars push to drive out male fans and replace them with female fans (the Force is female, fucking up Han, Luke, Lando, etc) the hard leftist turn of Star Trek etc.
Manga has LGBTQ content and it is directly marketed for those readers. Rest of the series have very little politics and it is about story telling and creating heroes and characters people can enjoy.
I don’t know how well booth sales have done but there were groups of people playing various card games against each other and I saw people buying reproduction weapons to either go with their costumes or for themselves. I don’t think it’s a money issue, just a shift in popularity.
