i can not think of one athlete that took an olympic red shirt and made the team…
Garrett Lowney, Jake Dietchler, Les Gutches (I think). Not super common but it has happened.
the googlewebs say Dietchler was in HS when he made the olympic team and Gutches did not take an olympic red shirt…
GOLD STAR for Lowney…
I thought that Dietchler had graduated and was taking an ORS before he got to Minnesota. Also I might have been wrong about Gutches, I thought he made the 96 team on an ORS.
he made the team while still in high school then took a redshirt after…
to be clear, i have heard these names before but i am basing all of this on google…
Gutches won NCAAs in 96 and made the Olympic team. I think I was confusing him with McIlravy who took an ORS in 96 but came back to Iowa in 97 to win another NCAA tournament.
i was actually watching some mcllravy matches last week or so…
obviously, i am familiar with the name, but, it was before my time… that dude was(is) fun to watch…
He was a cardio machine. Just wouldn’t stop coming straight at you.
dude definitely chained his attacks together which i am a big fan of…

He just wouldn’t stop. I forgot who it was who told me, they’d wrestled him, and they said it was tough to deal with him because he was constantly moving forward and had ridiculous setups that you wouldn’t even realize he was doing.
that was what i noticed watching some of his matches…
his attacks were just set ups for other slick shit and you just do not see that much in wrestling where most are just trying to time something…
i was listening to Mark Ironside on full tilt and he was talking about just taking a break and watching mcllravy practice…
inspired to watch some of his matches… straight killer… so creative…
I think that’s what made him so good was he didn’t really seem concerned with giving up points, he knew that if he kept the pace high and was constantly on the attack, he would eventually win. His NCAA finals match against Gerry Abas showed that exactly. He didn’t panic being down, he just kept creating scoring chances and Abas ran out of gas.
