Basset has some amazing wins for a HSer or any age ..Great tourney for him.I enjoy his videos he seems very humble

big win for Luke usually i root for Penn State and not Iowa but Ive been a fan of Lee,Great match..Im hoping Duke wrestles next year Id also like to see Sealey get in the line up as well as Kasak But dont see how they getting all 3 in so it may be Duke with the redshirt.Im also all in on Basset him and Duke my favorites now in college as well as a few NY guys..I was a fan of Lovett who had some great wins…Congrads to Otto ..What happened to Max in wrestle backs ? i thought u said he still be on one of the teams

Max got head locked and stuck by a kid he has beaten probably 5Xs before and then did not bother weighing in for second day and 5th place match…

Just a really bad day for him…

Another example that nothing is guaranteed and everyday you get to compete is a gift and should not be taken for granted…

I am almost 100% certain that Koelzer (3rd) is not U23 eligible so Max can still make that team if he wins U23 nationals in a month…

cant always be the hammer sometimes you have to be the nail..first lesson i learned by Matt Serra when i trained there

Cejudo got worked at a huge tournament only months before his Olympic Gold. Wins are confirmation and losses are lessons.

There is a flip side to the coin…

It was a huge moment for the two guys who beat him… neither had before… one of them max probably first wrestled when they were U15 aged…

Roberts came back from a horrible tourney last year and won the spot back…

Max will be fine…

it is official now… they are moving Senior Worlds from Bahrain…

not any surprise, but, where and when yet to be announced…

Have them bring it to my house. You and me can grill while we watch your boys merc people.

They should move it to somewhere that’s never hosted it. I’d like to really see it held at the soccer stadium in Monaco. They already hold the Deglane tournament in Nice which is like 10 miles away. Monaco would be awesome.

they are leaning towards somewhere in Asia…

a few years ago when Poland was refusing the UWW athletes VISAs for U20 Worlds, Jordan got it because they offered the biggest bag…

who knows what will happen…

the most interesting thing is the date…

right now Seniors is a week and half after U23 Worlds… an extra week between would not necessarilly bother me at all..

i only watched the finals of U20 and that was tough…

but…

good to see coby merrill flip the script on dreshaun ross and pick up the win…

the new grounding rules is taking away ross’ biggest weapon of doing nothing and just dropping to his knees all match and then one athletic move with 5 seconds left to win by 1…

I remember one wrestler didn’t go to worlds when it was in Jordan because their parents thought it was unsafe. I asked Dan Russell about it and he just laughed and said it was probably the safest place you could have been.

dude…

both of my mom’s are old, pushing 80… they are always so ā€œconcernedā€ where the boys are and how close it is to somewhere else… whether or not they are ā€œsafeā€

people who only watch the news and never do anything are always scared…

whatever…

i will say… Max hated Jordan… of course they tried to kill everyone with food poisoning at the hotel, but, there was nothing about that place he liked…

they base most everything on the food and the local talent…

croatia, hungary, estonia… all high on their list…

they are not really big on anywhere in central/south america…

i feel like in azerbajian they did have to move with the local military…

It’s probably a sign I’m getting up there, but I don’t remember who said what, but somebody, could have been somebody like Brinzer or Henderson, maybe Sims? Anyway they told me when they went to Bulgaria they packed a suitcase that had nothing but food that wouldn’t go bad for like a month in it. Because they didn’t know if they’d run into a situation where they got sick or couldn’t find anything that wasn’t questionable, so they had it as a backup plan. Especially since USA Wrestling didn’t give a shit either.

it is an entirely different world now…

hear stories about guys traveling in the soviet union in the 80s and at times it sounded really bleak…

the boys spent a couple of weeks in georgia last winter and they had a blast… all came back with papakhas… it sounded like a good time…

obviously almost all their trips they spend the majority in a gym and those all the same almost wherever you go…

but they usually get a couple of days to go enjoy the local life…

one of them might have ended up in the red light district in amsterdam when they were 17 and learned a few things…

i do not pretend that i ever get all the stories…

I was listening to Alger today and they were asking him about crazy things he’s seen overseas, and the answer he gave was not what I expected. Mostly because I know that he had seen a lot crazier things than that.

One of my coaches said that some of the wrestlers did very well because they did business with Mafia type guys in some parts of Europe and when they came over to wrestle, they’d bring things that weren’t easily available, or that you just couldn’t get. This went on into like the mid to late 90’s because even though the cold war ended, it still took a while for things to become more normal and open. I don’t know what it’s like now, but back then, those kinds of guys were always around wrestling and would throw parties, have big dinners at restaurants, all kinds of things like that.

i have no clue if there is any mafia involvement in russian wrestling currently…

i do love the stories from hockey guys who go over and play in the KHL…

judging from that craziness the russian mafia is still very much involved in sport…

listening to the Flo Bros this morning…

it is very hard for me to pay all that much attention to the leg grabbers when there is Greco going on…

i knew Carr lost, but, it did not really register as i was still reeling a bit from max’s loss… listening to them discuss carr’s performance just felt very familiar to my own thoughts…

i see so many posts on my own social media after the open and 99% of them are along the lines of just how hard this tournament is… didn’t have my best performance… will be back next year… going to get better…

that is because only one person in every bracket comes away from the open truly happy…

everyone else has to question what they did leading up to the tourney… what they did during the tourney… their coaches… their practice partners… everything…

this sport is brutal…

which is why it is the best sport on the planet…

i know none of this is some revelation or anything… not a hot take… just listening to the pod and thinking things instead of fully committing to software problem shooting on a monday morning…

Flo Bros brought up an interesting stat…

this was Spencer Lee’s first domestic free style loss since Fix beat him at Cadets in 2015…
