The future does not look bright for UFC legend BJ Penn.
The former two-division champion was arrested late last month for violating a restraining order, the fifth time “The Prodigy” has been arrested in 2025. As a result, the presiding judge paused criminal proceedings pending a mental health evaluation to determine Penn’s competency.
Failing (or refusing) the evaluation could result in Penn being institutionalized against his will. But if the Hawaiian is deemed fit to answer the charges levied against him, the 46 year-old Penn could be facing jail time when he returns to court on Jan. 9 in Hilo.
That’s according to a report from MMA Fighting.
It’s hard to imagine Penn getting a clean bill of health considering his recent troubles. In addition to his imaginary war with “crazy identity thieves,” Penn has continued to stalk and harass his mother while celebrating his defiance of her court-ordered restraining order.
Meanwhile, on Instagram:
The disturbing allegations against Penn started after Shin claimed she returned home from a trip and found all of her belongings removed from her bedroom. Penn denied any involvement in the missing property. A few days later, Shin claimed her purse was stolen from a safe, which led to her making a theft report with police.
Prior to filing for the restraining order, Shin told police she returned home from a separate trip and found Penn had allegedly put duct tape over her security cameras and glue into the deadbolt lock on her bedroom door to prevent her from entering. Shin later accused Penn of stealing her mail and when she claimed she found the mail in the back of a vehicle that belonged to one of her son’s friends, the 46-year-old fighter denied the accusation and allegedly grabbed Shin’s arms and shoved her against the car, which led to his mother screaming at the top of her lungs for her son Reagan Penn to help her.
B.J. Penn was eventually arrested and told to stay away from his mother for the next 48 hours, but Shin claims he returned to the home and presented video evidence as proof to police, which led to Penn’s second arrest in as many days.
“I believe my son [B.J. Penn] is suffering from Capgras delusional syndrome (a psychiatric disorder in which a person holds a delusion that a friend, spouse, parent, other close family member has been replaced by an identical imposter),” Shin told police when filing for the restraining order. “He believes I’m an imposter who has killed his family to gain control of the family assets.
“In the best interest for my safety, I ask the court for a six-month [temporary restraining order] and have my son ordered to get medical treatment or other source of therapy.”
Penn has continued to post the accusations about his family being replaced by imposters on social media with the 46-year-old also writing a “statement” after being arrested multiple times that read, “when a hero falls, cowards rejoice.”
All he wanted a Pepsi
Exhibit A:
“Ass & Legs”
That might be a good idea long term if the goal is to keep him alive.
That’s probably the best thing for him. He’s got some serious health issues that need to be treated and letting him be loose in public is dangerous for him and others.
Yep. Been saying it for a while that he needed help. Him sayng i’m part of the conspiracy against him made me back off from helping.
There were RUMORS of BJ’s drug use. Are those true and potentially a contributing factor?
Sad story.
IMO, absolutely.
I’ve seen first hand what amphetamine induced schizophrenia looks like. And this has all the hallmarks.
As a general rule, schizophrenia tends to manifest earlier in life, in your late teens to your 20s. But Late Onset Schizophrenia is absolutely a thing. And amphetamines can absolutely bring that out.
He needs to get off the tweak, get mental health treatment and on the correct medications.
I’ve been terrified for the guy, and his family anytime I see random BJ news pop up. Thinking it was going to involve a murder or crazy violence.
Schizophrenia is a treatable condition these days, to various degrees of success, but being on meth, and not accepting help and treatment is inevitably going to lead to disastrous results. And it fucking sucks for everyone involved.
Im sure his family has been beyond stressed out and absolutely at whits end, and just wants him back as their son, brother, father etc.
I’m a huge BJ Penn fan. Always have been. But some of the stuff involving him of close to 5-6yrs has really been suspect. Sound like he’s been slipping for a while based on stuff he would post about his ex, kids, family, etc.
Hope he gets the help he needs, he’s the only one who can turn his situation around. He’s had a shit load of people reach out to him trying to help, friends, fighters, UFC brass. Can’t help someone who doesn’t want it though.
Heavy drug use can certainly bring on mental illness, especially schizophrenia. I hope he gets the help he needs before he gets himself too deep.
Batu
And what he posted about his mom.
All boys in Hawaii know the amount of hairs on their mom’s asshole.
This is where I agree with him.
What I can’t stand is his delusional sense of entitlement
