Brain Damage Documentary (New) Nam Phan

bummin

I dont mean to be a dick but some number of fighters are going to aggravate this stuff with drinking or drug use.

It’s not going to be clear if Nam has been knocking back two fifths a night for 10 years on top of fighting or not.

Jared Rollins, that’s ā€œJ-Rockā€, right? That’s another one that my wife was friends with. Joe Schilling too. One of them was a big baby when it came to needles, but I can’t remember which one.

Boxing doesn’t have 3 additional hammer fists when someone’s already comatose.

Boxing allows people that are already concussed and borderline KO’d to get back up and fight on for the rest of the fight taking way more headshots than guys do in MMA. Not to mention the sparring headshots that are significantly more in boxing.

First time I’ve ever seen anyone argue MMA is worse than boxing.

When you look at who’s getting it the worst in MMA (Nam Phan, Spencer Fisher), it’s still generally the boxing style fights. Small guys with low KO rates going the full distance and taking a ridiculous amount of shots.

Nam was getting hit over 100 times on a regular basis:

For context, this was a high action boxing match (21 minutes longer than any of Nam’s fights):

It’s simple, gentlemen, if you participate in a sport in which you hit one another full force ( whether it’s punches, kicks, or hard tackles ), you take the risk of suffering from CTE in the long run. There are anomalies, like myself and others, such as George Chuvalo and Jake Lamotta, who absorbed a tremendous amount of punishment but remained healthy and clear-minded. Then, on the flip side of that, there’s the case of two defensive wizards who rarely got hit clean during their careers, but who are now in rough shape. Wilfred Benitez was slippery as hell & only suffered a pair of tough KO losses later on in his career. Now he’s basically a vegetable. Meanwhile, James Toney was as slick as they came & IMO, he was a greater proponent of the ā€œshoulder roll defenseā€ than Mayweather in his prime. But despite that, he now speaks like he has marbles in his mouth & he’s sometimes slow to understand things.

So, it’s pretty much guesswork as to who’s going to wind up suffering from dementia. It’s a sad fact that scores of combat sports athletes & football players will live that are reduced in quality by what they chose to do. But it is a choice.

I wonder if he is aware of his decline?
I know a guy that has started to get trembling in the hands, he says it’s not Parkinsons, and he has been on meds, but it made things worse for him, so he stopped. He says that he forgets things and has a hair trigger and snaps.

They say it’s likely what happens in the gym rather than in actual fights.

Oh, hell yeah. I took a lot more punishment in the gym training for my fights & as a sparring partner in camp getting beat up by top-level guys.

Rollins I believe lost to War Machine at TUF finale.

Yeah, I remember that. She told me she was crushed when J-Rock lost because she couldn’t stand War Machine. Apparently he was arrogant & he said something inappropriate to her.

I don’t know one way or the other, but lately I’ve been seeing articles stating MMA is worse because headkicks and such have much more force than punches

I’m going to have to look up some older interviews. He talked like Mush Mouth as long as I’ve known of him. But I feel like you probably actually met the guy and know more than my limited knowledge

No, sir, I never met him, but I did speak to him on the phone back in 2017 & he was as clear as a bell.
