Yup. Boxing is way worse. More rounds, 16 oz gloves… sparring with headgear is even worse too. Also, aren’t most boxing fights basically unlimited knockdowns? I don’t know boxing like I do MMA but I’ve never seen a fight stopped due to a specific number of knockdowns. Only because a fighter couldn’t continue.
Knew a guy who was a national level boxer. From when I first met him he was very sharp, then over the years his condition slipped to slurring words. Weight loss. Neck surgery. A whole bunch of medical issues.
I used to have chats with him about geopolitics, etc. Smart guy. Was a massive communist though. Had a Che tattoo.
Top notch guy though.
Well, it’s usually 3 in a round. Some don’t have that limit, and it’s up to the referees discretion, but even then a good ref is going to stop the fight after 3
I’ve heard three in a round as well but I’ve never seen one stopped like that before. I don’t watch boxing all the time but yeah 3 in a round is nuts and should always be stopped.
Boxing is definitely worse. There have been lots of deaths too. I wonder what the numbers would be for something like Judo. Training is probably safer now but I know a lot of people have gotten fucked up from being dropped on the head repeatedly.
Haha, I was being purely selfish: I don’t have kids, but I did get kicked in the head a lot.
In all seriousness there is a very long history of boxing, at least here in the U.K., and whilst there are individual stories which are undeniably tragic, I don’t think there’s the level of dementia implied by this report - and assuming my admittedly hearsay knowledge is correct, I just wonder why.
Many areas used to have a 3 knockdown rule. If a fighter was dropped 3 times the fight was over via a TKO. But, that’s not the case anymore. But it’s rare that a referee will allow more than 3 knockdowns in a round. Once in a while if the knockdowns are quick flash knockdowns with the fighter not being hurt too badly, a ref might not stop it even after 4 knockdowns, but it’s very rare.
Nam beat up my friend in MMA. I hated him for that but I liked the dude other than that. I wish fighter managed their money better and stopped fighting before their brains got mushed
