Are you supposed to kick where you hit with the top of your foot, or the bottom of your foot? I’ve seen it both ways on youtube. Thanks.
It depends. You can hit with the ball of the foot, especially to the liver, stomach, bladder, etc. You can also hit with the top part of the foot when you kick someone in the groin or to the chin.
Got it - either way, depending on the target. Thanks soup!
The general front snap kick, think karate is ball of the foot, the foot jab in my opinion is better. In Savate I was taught to kick with the tip of your boot. It really hurts on the inside of the thigh.

Thanks Mongrel. When you say “tip of boot”, you mean while actually wearing boots? Because without boots that would be your toes, no? Surely you should not lead with your toes, too big a risk of breaking them no? Thanks!
You’re gonna need to grow legs if you’re going chin… stick to kneecaps..
Yes. Ball of foot or tip of boot like Mongrel says. The top of the foot is a nut punt.
And yeah a toe kick is real. Jab that fucker under a rib and you’ll trust and believe.
Are you serious about the toe kick crescentwrench? Your toes straight into them? Can’t that VERY easily jam/break your toes? Hitting with the bottom/ball of your foot makes sense to me, as does extending your foot and hitting with the top of it, depending on the angle of the target, etc., as soup said. But straight up kicking them, toes first? Sounds like a recipe for disaster!
Fuckin’ crazy rite!
So… you were joking?
Traditional Savate you wear shoes or a savate boot.
I like to kick with top of my sole. I usually can poke the stomach good and it hurts guys, even when I’m not kicking hard. I like having the extra range as I’m not tall.
I had a guy flat kick my check when I bull rushed in and it took me off my feet

No he’s right. Toe kicks are a thing, like a dagger into the gut.
I saw a similar question ts, about landing side kicks with teh blade of teh foot, or the flat of the foot.
Apparently you’re suposed to land side kicks with the blade, or what i call sidewards sprained ankle position!
LOL, I saw that video. Look closely, he landing with his TOES FIRST! That is nuts. No way that is the correct way to do it.
One thing (also) I think I got confused about - when someone says “land with the ball of the foot” - I thought that meant the bottom of the heel. Does it instead mean the part of the foot behind the does? Thanks!
