Carlson Gracie and Marco Ruas debate in portug some translation

tio_ti says:

Nice find. I don’t have time to watch all of it now, but I watched the first 5 minutes.

The first 5 minutes are Joe Moreira explaining why he gave Marco Ruas a jiu-jitsu black belt and Carlson saying that it wasn’t appropriate to give a guy black belt to a guy who never trained with a gi just because he is a tough guy and your buddy.

I’ll try to transcribe the dialogue later if I have time.

NegoVio says:

Well, i would translate that if i had time, i’m currently very busy, i’m sorry.

I didn’t even had time to watch the rest of the videos, just saw the first one, and it’s pretty impressive.

It starts with Marco Ruas explaining his recently awarded BJJ Black Belt under Joe Moreira after he helped Joe (a legit BJJ BB) train to fight in the UFC. This promotion to BB was very controversial at the time, as people may know Marco Ruas comes from Luta-Livre, BJJ/Gracie old school rivals. Marco Ruas basically says that he doesn’t care about the Black Belt and doesn’t want to be called a Black Belt. Carlson Gracie is obviously pretty vocal against Ruas’ Black Belt and there is a tense but respectful exchange between the two. Carlson says that he doesn’t wear a BB anymore because it means nothing, everybody has one, he uses a Dark Blue Belt instead.

Then they start to talk about Allan Goes’ “most recent” fight against the “newcomer” Dan Henderson. Allan lost 3 point due to a “attempted kick to the head of a downed opponent”. Carlson says the kick didn’t even hit, and that the judge should have not separated the two since Allan had a RNC on Henderson. Joe Moreira also agrees that Allan should have won the fight…

The interviewer (Jorge “Joinha” Guimarães, Anderson Silva’s current manager) asks Carlson about his split with Vitor Belfort. Carlson says Vitor is a Traitor, that he took Vitor under his wing like a father and Vitor betrayed him and warns Vitor friends what he would do to them since he did that to his “father”, se says Vitor must be crazy…

When asked about promotions, Carlson says Frederico Lapenda (Ruas former manager, BTT founder, WVC owner…) robbed him, robbed his students, didn’t pay fight purses. Ruas agrees with him and says he is suing Lapenda.

That’s my quick work of the first video. I hope somebody else have the time to do a proper job, i’m sorry i don’t have that time right now.

that show was legit back in the day. Appreciate the translation. If you get some time, you could continue with the translation.

Joe sold out long ago on fake belt promotions. But maybe he was just ahead of his time as all the USA JJ is going to promotions based on subscriptions and not technical merit.

I remember these and watched most of them. Carlson was right about Ruas getting a BB! More and more the very people who called out TMA literally became TMA in their practices and here we are today!

Anytime I see a BB given out after an MMA fight I just shake my head! BJJ rank has absolutely NOTHING to do with MMA fighting nor its results!

It’s a martial art with a fundamental curriculum with a ranking system that is based off your knowledge of the art, your ability to therefore display your knowledge (rolling, teaching).

It reminds me of the belt exams. For example early on say blue bar on your white belt: Do a right front role from your feet! Example: You were then assessed that you could properly tuck your head to the left, bend your knees, swing your right arm through and complete the movement by rolling up to your feet.

If you couldn’t do it, no pass!

You didn’t get promoted just because you showed up!

If ranking was based off mat results then most HS or College Wrestlers would hold a higher BJJ rank from the moment they start a BJJ class because they will take people down at will, smash them, maybe even submit through brute force. Ok, but that has nothing do with their knowledge of the art!

They wouldn’t be able to explain nor demonstrate collar chokes, positions, shrimping, staying on your side, protecting your neck and arms, sweeps, etc.
