Chael Choking

Chael Sonnen is making some big proclamations regarding a potential Jon Jones vs. Tom Aspinall heavyweight title unification match.

Jones vs. Aspinall has been the match to make for over a year now, but negotiations have been underway for months with UFC saying it’s gonna happen and Jones sounding like maybe it’s not. Aspinall, for his part, has been not-so-patiently waiting for “Bones” to sign on the dotted line or vacate.

Well, according to Chael Sonnen on the latest episode of ESPN’s Good Guy / Bad Guy, the fight is locked in.

“I am confident enough to tell you that that fight is done, that fight is agreed all the way down to the date,” Sonnen claimed. “That, I do have the confidence to tell you.”
For a man so certain that there was a date locked, he hedged on when it might happen.

“International Fight Week would make perfect sense,” Sonnen said. “But in my heart I always thought they were going to go back to New York.”

That would be November for Madison Square Garden, which has been where the UFC has planned to deploy Jones for the past two years. Asked about Jon’s demands in the media including six months to prepare, Chael scoffed.

“I’m telling you, this Jon Jones business? Jones will say a lot of things to the media,” Sonnen said. “When he gets that phone call, ‘Here’s the guy you’re fighting, do you understand?’ ‘Yes.’ And that is what he will say. All the other reports are not true. Jon has come out, he’s been a troll, he’s had some fun, he’s even tried to negotiate through the media.”

“Jon Jones has not ducked this fight. I wish he did, I’d love to bury him. but he didn’t. He did not duck Tom Aspinall.”

As always, we’d like to remind everyone that Chael Sonnen has a unique history of being right about Jon Jones news, but has also never let the truth get in the way of a good story. We’ll keep you posted as we work to confirm the UFC’s plans for UFC 317 at International Fight Week and beyond.

As fans absorb every piece of news coming from Aspinall’s camp, they are aimed at understanding the potential nuances that could influence the match.

Jon Jones Fight Updates: The Waiting Game

Jon Jones has remained somewhat enigmatic during the fight negotiations with Tom Aspinall. After a massive title defense against Stipe Miocic at UFC 309, Jones’ decision to remain quiet has raised eyebrows, suggesting that he is strategically plotting his next steps. While some fans criticize Jones for not rushing into this anticipated fight, others believe that he is wisely using the time to prepare mentally and physically, ensuring he enters the octagon fully ready to face a formidable opponent. His recent cryptic messages indicate that he may not be as content as he seems, stirring curiosity about his forthcoming plans.

Moreover, the UFC, represented by Dana White, has consistently stated that the fight between Jones and Aspinall will happen. This assurance provides comfort to fans who have been eager for updates. However, Jones’ public perception has grown increasingly complex—caught between the legacy he’s built and the looming threat of a challenger like Aspinall. As Jones navigates the complexities of negotiations and preparation, fans continue to speculate on what this means for his legacy and his future in MMA, especially as he weighs the balance between championship aspirations and a potential withdrawal from the sport.

The Importance of Grip Strength in MMA

Grip strength is often an underestimated aspect of mixed martial arts, yet it plays a pivotal role in a fighter’s overall performance. Athletes like Tom Aspinall and Jon Jones understand that a strong grip can influence grappling exchanges, submissions, and overall control during matches. Aspinall’s recent achievements in grip strength—outperforming Jones and setting personal records—illustrate the significance of this physical trait. Enhanced grip strength not only benefits fighters during grappling but also during striking, as maintaining proper positioning can be critical in executing effective strikes or defending against opponents.

As training methodologies have advanced, the focus on specific strength attributes such as grip may give fighters like Aspinall an edge in future bouts. This focus not only helps improve technique but also boosts confidence as a fighter realizes their physical maximization. Fans are eager to see how such training elements will manifest in the octagon, particularly in a high-stakes scenario against someone like Jon Jones. As both fighters advance their training to include grip strength exercises, it’s likely this will play a role in deciding the outcome of their anticipated showdown.

UFC Fight Negotiations: Understanding the Delays

Negotiating high-profile fights in the UFC can be a complex and often frustrating process, as seen in the ongoing discussions between Aspinall and Jones. Factors such as fighter readiness, contract stipulations, and promotional schedules all contribute to the timeline of announcements and confirmations. For fans, this can lead to impatience as they yearn for clarity and confirmation. Aspinall’s proactive approach in training and engaging with fans serves to keep momentum going, while Jones’ quieter stance raises questions about his commitment to the fight. The contrasting strategies highlight the intricacies involved in fight negotiations.

The UFC‘s involvement, especially from figures such as Dana White, often aims to reassure fans that their interest will not be overlooked. By facilitating communication between fighters and ensuring both parties are on the same page, the organization seeks to solidify fights that can generate significant pay-per-view interest. Understanding these negotiations gives fans better insight into the complexities of matchmaking in UFC, especially for a significant title fight that not only impacts the fighters’ careers but the integrity and reputation of the sport as a whole.

On the cusp of potentially retiring or quieting down his fighting career, Jones’ choices reflect a broader conversation about longevity and vitality in high-impact sports. Jon Jones vs. Tom Aspinall is not a done deal after all, according to Chael Sonnen.

A day after claiming that the highly anticipated heavyweight championship unification bout is “is agreed, all the way down to the date,” Sonnen is now walking back that claim in classic Sonnen fashion. The three-time UFC title challenger explained on his YouTube channel it was his understanding Jones would fight Aspinall next, but now sees another hurdle standing in the way of that matchup.

“OK, I might have said that,” Sonnen said. “I also did believe that to be true, so I do remember—I might have said that. It would be real easy to know, I film everything and put it out. But one thing I do know I told you word for word for word for word, I told you Tom Aspinall’s next fight is done, but I don’t know that it will be against Jon Jones. I then told you if Jon Jones fights again, Jon Jones’ next fight will be against Tom Aspinall. I told you that.”

Instead of Jones, Sonnen expects Gane—a former interim champion himself—to get a shot at Aspinall’s interim belt.

“The current plan right now, Tom Aspinall vs. Ciryl Gane for the interim championship,” Sonnen said. “Now, I will back the moves. I will back the moves with full integrity in place because our overarching theme, our constitution itself within the sport of MMA is we fiercely adhere to the rules that we make up as we go. So, I’m on board and I like anything that ends in world championship.”

The convoluted heavyweight championship scene came about as a result of Francis Ngannou parting ways with UFC in 2023 with the belt still around his waist. A new champion was soon crowned with Jones jumping up from light heavyweight and making short work of Gane at UFC 285. However, an injury forced Jones out of a scheduled title defense against Stipe Miocic eight months later, which led to Aspinall defeating Alexander Volkov for an interim title.

Since then, both men have defended their belts, with Aspinall avenging a loss to Curtis Blaydes at UFC 304 and Jones beating Miocic in their rescheduled bout at UFC 309. Jones has repeatedly shot down any talk of an Aspinall fight, criticizing his opponent’s credentials despite Aspinall sporting an 8-1 UFC record while Jones has only competed in the heavyweight division twice.

Like it or not, Sonnen claims if fans are going to ever see Jones fight Aspinall, the pressure is on Aspinall to put on another strong performance first.

“Not only are we going to have both [an interim and undisputed champion], we are going to contend for a second time the interim championship,” Sonnen said. “But we’re going to do it for the first time in the presence of our undisputed champion and we may or may not be doing that in nine weeks at International Fight Weekend.”

“I’m here to tell you, according to a remarkably good source, Jon Jones is going to be afforded the ability to wait 180 days, which is equivalent to six months, which is what he asked for,” Sonnen added. “Tom Aspinall is going to fight with Ciryl Gane, which was, in fact, on the table many months ago and then Ciryl was gifted a decision in a fight that he lost against [Alexander] Volkov. That’s the way the story happened. And now we’re going to defend an interim champion with the existence of an undisputed champion, which is against the laws of logic and the Oxford English Dictionary’s definition of champion as well as undisputed as well as interim, but we are going to adhere to the one thing that we do consistently: We are going to closely follow the rules that we make up as we go.”

Cheal is such a fucking clown these days.
Im surprised anyone still listens to that lad.

The Latest Intel About Jones-Aspinall

Sonnen attempted to clear the air Tuesday afternoon, although he didn’t fully apologize for not being 100 percent accurate.

“OK, I might have said that,” Sonnen said. “I also did believe that to be true, so I do remember—I might have said that. It would be real easy to know, I film everything and put it out. I then told you if Jon Jones fights again, Jon Jones’ next fight will be against Tom Aspinall. I told you that.”

Chael Sonnen is having a change of heart … which is probably the result of a change in information.

Not long after the UFC insider and former two-division title contender suggested the Jon Jones vs. Tom Aspinall title unification fight was “agreed all the way down to the date,” the former pizza peddler now claims Jones will get an additional six months to prepare, as requested.

That paves the way for yet another interim heavyweight title defense.

Honestly listen to the opposite of what Chael says, especially when he picks a winner of a fight.
