Colby Covington is looking to get another win over Jorge Masvidal – this time in the courtroom.
In a civil lawsuit filed March 23 in Miami-Dade County court, Covington, through his attorney Javier A. Finlay, says he is seeking payment for damages in excess of $100,000 after Masvidal punched him in the face outside of a Miami steakhouse in 2022, MMA Junkie learned Thursday through court documents after an initial report by Florida talk show host Andy Slater.
The incident already went through the criminal legal system, where Masvidal pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor battery charge after striking a deal with prosecutors to drop two felony charges. Masvidal spent two days in jail and paid a fine of $955 for legal fees.
A mask-wearing Masvidal was accused of waiting for Covington outside Steak Papi on March 21, 2022. When Covington exited the restaurant, he says he was struck twice by Masvidal. The incident came weeks after Covington defeated Masvidal by unanimous decision at UFC 272. Covington said Masvidal verbalized during the attack, “You shouldn’t have f*cking talked about my kids,” referring to comments made in the lead-up to UFC 272.
In the recently filed complaint, Covington’s attorney said his client suffered bodily injury resulting in pain and suffering, disability, disfigurement, physical impairment, mental anguish, loss of capacity for the enjoyment of life, expense of hospitalization, medical and nursing care, loss of earnings, and aggravation of a pre-existing condition.
Covington seeks “all allowable damages and for such other and further relief, in law or in equity, to which plaintiff may justly be entitled.”
An initial court date has not yet been set.
