This week on the Combat Base Podcast we hit an epic historical episode in discussing the Gracie Challenge Matches. What were they, how did they come to be? Chris retells a few amazing stories of his matches. We round out the pod with some Q’s. Enjoy and let us know what you think!
They sure as shit don’t do those challenges anymore.
The Gracie dynasty is dead. Neiman Gracie is the only half decent one in the last decade and he’s lowkey ass in Bellator and PFL. I root for Kron but we all seen what happened to him in his last few fights…
Seems that without strong takedowns, heavy pressure, & top control it’s a tough go for bjj in MMA nowadays. You can be a sub wizard but if you aren’t able to pressure & wear guys down with takedowns & top control those subs are much more tough to create. Almost have to beat them up standing first or sneak one early.
I’m not a Gracie fan boy. In fact I think a lot of their product is ridiculous. But the Gracie’s fought to demonstrate the effectiveness of jiu jitsu so people would pay for them to teach jiu jitsu. I don’t train at any kind of a Gracie affiliate but we have several in my city, Gracie Barra, a Gracie Certified Training Center and a Royce Gracie affiliate. In the next city over, they have a Renzo affiliate. Those schools all absolutely dominate everyone else in terms of numbers of students and revenue. The name Gracie is the biggest money maker in martial arts and it’s not close.
HKP are you this other guy Tobin ?
MY KWAN JANG NIM MR. JOON RHEE WOULD HAVE SOMETHING TO SAY ABOUT THAT
I believe he’s dead.
HE STILL WOULD, THOUGH
NO WP
You are also not Chris H right ?
The Gracie challenge matches were in a controlled environment, padded floors, and of course against TMA guys who had no clue, not only that, but against guys who never trained against resisting opponents
And for the most part, not against guys who were bigger and stronger, which was the selling point of GJJ
