Would you be in favor of one 15-30 minute round under the current unified rules of mma? To me it would be a regulated fight that best reflected a controlled street fight.
I noticed how many guys start looking at the clock at the end of round 1 or 2. If the fight was just 1 round people wouldn’t conserve/coast at the end of rounds or push themselves to reach the bell for another chance to take even more damage on slightly improved legs. I’ve noticed some guys are winning a round so they avoid engaging (basically run) for a minute to lock in that round. Most of the things that have made mma a little stale can be fixed with 1 round lasting 15 to 30 minute with no interruptions. Most guys will not make 10 minutes without a stool and a water break so finish rates would definitely go up. I’m also not big on cutting weight so I’d give each weight class a 20lbs range difference to encourage everyone to fight without depletion.
130-149.5, Feather
150-169.5, Light
170-189.5, Welter
190-209.5, Light Heavy
210-229.5, Cruiser
230-249.5, Heavy
250+, Super Heavy
I know the sport needs regulation so that’s why I’m willing to adopt every rule but the 3-5x 5 minute rounds. I personally would take 1 round pride rules in a cage for 20 minutes with no gloves but that would be too perfect. I would also have 1 yearly open weight tournament where a trophy is awarded instead of a belt.
What do I have right or wrong and what would you do if you could create an mma organization any way you wanted?
Same rules except knees to downed openers, no soccer kicks
I’d put sensors in the cup, an alarm goes off if it receives a blow that passes a minimum threshold. If also register the force.
Eye pokes are treated more severely. Ref can deduct a point for the first offense and he can look at replay to make a decision. If you injure someone with an eye poke you are suspended for the same time as the injured person is out.
More squash matches
More perks for fighters taking last minute fights
More punishment for missing weight, unless you are a last minute replacement you get docked 25% for missing 1 pound 30% for 2 pounds, 50% over 3. If you miss weight you cannot win, you only get a NC for winning, but the guy who made weight can still get the W.
The Cain rule, if you are champ you must defend in a year or less. If you are injured you give up the belt but get a title shot when you come back.
Fights would randomly be in cage or ring depending on the night. Possibility for other fight area types as well (like karate combat ring, etc)
Would have not just MMA, but Muay Thai and open possibility for boxing, Lethwei, bare knuckle boxing/MMA etc.
Rounds would not all be standard. Open possibility for single 15 minute one round fights, multiple 3 round fights, and other formats.
Would have “legends” division for dudes over a certain age. Roids/PEDs allowed and fighters will have to wear the uniform of their original claimed martial art (BJJ guys, gi. Wrestlers singlet, etc).
Would have open weight division, again fighters wear traditional uniforms.
I was thinking of the cards being 7 fights, 1 from each weight class. That way tournaments would be easier to plan and could be held simultaneously, hold 2-4 events a month. Prelims would be backup fights.
I do like the yellow/red card system I just want to see no breaks in a fight until it’s over.
I liked the early 00s UFC weight classes with no one below 155. A super heavyweight division would be cool to add on top of that. The over 260-pounders usually lost to the lighter guys anyway during that time. Maybe it would play out differently today.
I personally like cards that are stacked with HWs.
But I suppose that could be accomplished with tournaments.
Make them 3-month 8-man tournaments.
You only fight once, then round 2 is 30 days later, and the final 30 days after that.
Would cut down on minor injuries derailing tournaments, meaning less alternates. Also take away an unfair fatigue advantage if one guy has a tough fight and the other a flash KO in the first.
Wouldn’t change much. Smaller cage, PRIDE rules, improved scoring/judges, better refs (ALL fouls result in a point deduction immediately - don’t fucking foul people).
Everyone fights 3x/year. More clarity and logic used in rankings.
Aggressive scouting for new talent and piggy backing off of other sports’ tryouts, like the NFL Combine.
Better communication with fans - no bullshit fight announcements from a fucking cell phone in a broom closet.
Well, I meant more or less things that would impact the fights/fighters. I’m not changing weight classes, rounds, fight times, etc. Just improving the bones of what’s already there. Everything else is front office shit.
So basically 25 ft. APEX octagon for all fights, which isn’t much of a change because a lot of fighters already have or will have fights in there. And I’ll clarify and say some PRIDE rules, mainly kicks, stomps, and knees allowed to the head of a grounded opponent. Elbows still allowed on the ground just like the UFC. Rounds/length of rounds don’t change. Yellow/Red cards for stalling are a go.
Ring. One 20 minute round with no decisions. Then one 10 minute round that’s scored. Vale Tudo rules. Headbutts, elbows, kicking downed opponent. No gloves or wraps of any kind.
No biting, no eye gouging, no groin kicks, no spiking on head (universal rule). Nobody needs to lose an eye or die. No stand ups.
99% of fight will end in the first 10 minutes.
You’ll find out pretty damned quick who can fight.
Mark my words that under these rules and no gloves wrestling and BJJ will dominate.
