VICE TV is giving fight fans a closer look at the “Dark Side of the Cage.”
The new series explores some of biggest combat sports headlines over the last 20 years, starting with the Kimbo Slice phenomenon featured in Episode 1. Slice, real name Kevin Ferguson, went from backyard brawler to one of the biggest name in MMA.
Returning some of the most “staggering” television ratings in fighting history.
“Kimbo Slice was a powerhouse in the cage and an icon in MMA history,” the preview stated. “VICE TV’s new series ‘Dark Side of the Cage’ begins with the story of the legendary fighter. The premiere episode airs Wednesday, January 8th at 10PM ET on VICE TV.”
Slice died from heart complications at age 42.
His 32 year-old son, Kevin “Baby Slice” Ferguson Jr., followed in his father’s footsteps, competing for Bellator MMA from 2016-2020, compiling a 3-3 record with one No Contest. Ahead of the “Dark Side” special, you can relive Kimbo’s Top 10 moments by clicking here.
“Slice will forever be a part of UFC history as a contestant on Season 10 of The Ultimate Fighter in 2009, and for having fought twice inside the Octagon at The Ultimate Fighter Finale and UFC 113,” UFC wrote in a statement after Ferguson’s death. “He carried himself as a true professional during his time in our organization. While he will never be forgotten for his fighting style and transcendent image, Slice will also be remembered for his warm personality and commitment to his family and friends.”
Ferguson’s final fight came against Dada 5000 under the Bellator MMA banner just a few months prior to his untimely passing.
Fuck yeah. icy Mike.
Was going to say if he’s not in this it’s bs. But he is. So it’s not.
Calling Kimbo legendary, a superstar, and an icon is a bit of a stretch.
Anyone that knew anything about MMA knew he was a joke cashing in on his street fighting fame.
I remember the Dada 5000 fight in Bellator being a “so bad its good” scenario and then the aftermath being really grim with Dada collapsing after the fight, having a heart attack and almost dying and Kimbo pissing hot and then dying a few months later.
Then it turned out Dada didn’t have anyone in his camp who knew how to cut weight, so he was eating bananas and eggs and not drinking water leading up to the fight
Went 5-2 in mma only fighting in the ufc, bellator, and elite fc. Three of the biggest organizations in the world at the time.
Fought Houston Alexander when he was killing people in the cage.
James Thompson. Guy was supposed to end him.
Ken shamrock. Legend. Kimbo was 41 Ken was 50. Both on the juice so who cares.
Tank Abbott. Cmon. Everyone watched that fight also.
He was a ratings win for any org he fought for.
Kimbo is a legend. You say Kimbo slice and my grandma knows who he is.
These shows usually revolve around individuals with drug problems, Mental health struggles, criminal problems. Kimbo was none of those things. The last season of Dark Side of The Ring was garbage, so there isn’t high chances this will be any good or paint MMA in a good light.
Seth had to weigh in with $43 dollars of rolled-up quarters in his pockets to be considered heavy enough to fight Kimbo. That organization buckled before they had the chance to do the post-fight interview.
Is there a way to watch without giving vice a fucking penny?
The stuff like Elite XC allegedly trying to fix the fight so that Seth kept it standing is def. Dark Side material.
Then there is also the disastrous Dada fight I previously mentioned.
Not sure what direction they go as the teaser doesn’t reveal much, but you can def. do a Dark Side about Kimbo focusing on how greasy MMA promoters were booking him
ALL DAY
Gannon took Kimbo’s bread long before it was cool. lol
People today can’t conceive of how small the MMA circle was even pre TUF nevermind the dark ages.
Everyone knew everybody in the dark ages or at the minimum knew a guy who knew them,
Nobody who is 5‐2 is a legend.
Yeah, he beat Shamrock, who was washed up and only beat cans in the years leading up to his fight.
He had name recognition, that was it.
When he showed up on TUF and nobody gave a shit or was scared of him doesn’t speak too highly of a “legendary fighter”
Kimbo is a legend just from KenFlo’s play-by-play of the Gannon fight. That was huge on the original UG. People couldn’t refresh fast enough to get the updates. Anyone who was around then remembers how crazy it was.
