Don Frye on Mark Kerr. Lol

That night, Ken easily strangled Severn. Oleg lost to Dan twice, and Tank received an incredibly brutal one side drubbing from Dan. To say that at UFC 6 Tank beats Ken is…controversial to say the least. I might not go so far as illogical hater, but you have to admit it’s at least taking the underdog, no?

Well, i can see your point but MMA math doesn’t always work.

Your Felix Lee Mitchell comment sounded like you were regurgitating an old silly talking point, and your comment about Oleg being a “more durable version of Ken”, sounded to me like you were trolling.

If those are really your true opinions, then they make no sense.
But if you are truly arguing in good faith I will respond to your incorrectness in a more productive way.

Sure, of course.

But your “assertion” that UFC 6 Tank would handle Ken, doesn’t make a lot of sense when looking at all of the available context.

Same goes for your Taktarov comment.

Tank had a punchers chance against almost anyone. So yeah if Ken decided to stand there and let Tank use his head for a punching bag – Tank could win.
I think that applies to anyone Tank fought back then.

But realistically, we know Ken would be looking for takedown and submission. We know Ken handled bigger and more skilled opponents. We know tank completely gassed against Oleg, who never had anything for Ken. And we know Tank lost to pretty much every high level fighter he ever faced.

People like Tank. He was fun to watch. And I think some people want to believe he would have beat Ken.
But the contextual evidence of the time makes Ken the clear favorite.

Don Frye and Kimo submitted tank.

What do you think Ken would do?

To be fair though Don was extremely lucky to get the sub in that fight he was getting destroyed til Tank tripped.

I think Frye would have found a way to win regardless… But I digress..

That’s kind of helping my argument though.
All it took was for tank to slip and once on the ground it was an easy win for Frye.
And Frye was nowhere near the submission grappler Ken was at the time.

Ken matched up really well with big wrestling based guys back then. They kind of played into what he was good at, because he had submissions and was also stronger than his size.
Look at the Severn fight in UFC 6.
Severn had been tossing guys around. He’s a big high level Greco guy. My uncle was on the presidential team, and he knows Severn. His reaction to the Ken fight has always been “that shouldn’t have happened”. He gets pretty defensive about it, mad even, lol.
Because Ken didn’t use some flashy leg scissor, or try to stand back and kick box.
Ken walked right up to Dan fucking Severn and engaged in upper body clinching. Ken chose to fight in the one area where Severn should have had the clear advantage – and Severn couldn’t do anything. Then Ken subbed him.
After the fight, Ken actually told Blatnick “I wanted to see if he could throw me”!
I mean…wow.
Ken was upset that people were saying Severn was the favorite and the better grappler – and he wanted to prove that wasn’t the case.

In an interview sometime before the Coleman fight, Severn said he never tied up with anyone he couldn’t move before. But he couldn’t move Ken. IIRC it was Blatnick Severn said that to.

And RIP Blatnick.
Always liked him.

These guys gassed each other out.
They were basically napping at one point.

He has said in reference to Ken having had to be on steroids as well.

That might have been way later when Severn was propping himself up for being a clean fighter.

I’m talking about a quote from that time period back then. Was nothing to do with steroids.

Severn also said something before the Kimo fight about Kimo’s size working against him because Ken Shamrock is “a very powerful individual”.
He wasn’t knocking him for roids. He was just saying the guy is strong as fuck.

You don’t believe Ken was on steroids at that time?

Of course he was.

You make it sound like he slipped on a banana peel lol. He was exhausted and fell down when he was off balance.

His answer to being back mounted was to reach down and grab Don’s foot and try to pry his leg. Tank’s kryptonite was subs, and Ken was as strong or stronger than him on the floor. That is a comical mismatch.

Maybe Tank clips him, but it curtainly seems unlikely.

Steroids or not everyone who has rolled with Ken says he was the strongest person they rolled with.

Don Frye once said in a steroid free league that Severn beats anyone. Regardless he didn’t even have any knowledge of guillotine defense and Ken had an impressive win against him. Their rematch that Severn “won” is possibly the worst, most boring fight in UFC history.

Devon Hannibal is a strange cat.

Absolutely.

Even Frye said “Ken is one of the strongest humans I’ve ever touched”.
And Fry fought older smaller Ken.

Mike C on the old site compared Ken’s strength to Brock.
I was even a little surprised by the statement.
But it shows how strong Ken really was.
He also said Hughes was freaky strong.

Mo Smith said Ken was the strongest person he ever touched. Someone asked “stronger than Coleman?” and Mo literally laughed and said it wasn’t even close.

Frank said the same on Rampage’s podcast. Ken is freaky strong.

I love Don but he might be the most unobjective person alive lol.

I believe that Dan didn’t know anything about guillotine defense as much as I believe Ken didn’t punch him in the rematch because “little kids looked up to me, and I told them they have to follow rules” or when he said he got rear naked choked because Royce had a Gi on.

I love those guys and have infinite respect and appreciation to their contributions to fighting, but they’re all full of shit lol.

He’s a little biased I think.
But Severn was a beast for sure.

Sure.
Should have been changed to a NC IMO.

At least Ken had a somewhat reasonable excuse.

Severn had another snoozer vs Kimo in Pride.
Doesn’t mean I don’t like him.
