He’s not wrong. The ufc is literally a revolving door of 850-900 fighters. I remember watching Fight Night’s 15 yrs ago and at least knowing a bit about everyone on the main card at least. Now their are fighters on the main card of PLE’s I’ve never heard of.
The UFC wanted fighters on the cheap and completely oversaturated the market with so many events. I haven’t even watched a PPV since McGregor/Khabib and a fight night since 2020 amidst the COVID shutdowns.
I agree but at least they aren’t pushing fake stars any more like Sage Northslutt and Paige Vansant.
They do try to. They fast tracked the shit out of Poatan, and guys like Strickland, Ilia, Islam, DDP, O’Malley, Paddy, Shara Bullet, Bryce, Jean Silva, Lopes, Rosas, Aspinall, Merab, Garry etc werent really on the radar until the last few years. They just cant find themselves a new Conor or anything particularly close.
In the era of tiktok O’Malley types, I’m actually glad they’re not finding new, “stars”.
People like that are insufferable 9 times out of 10.
First post nails it.
Yeah but fighters like him get people to tune in. Either to see him win or lose. It makes the sport more exciting. I can’t imagine an MMA where every guy has an nba personality and answers every question with “I gave it 100 percent”
I was trying to think of somebody that I dislike and tuned in to watch them lose. Jones sort of fits that bill but I also tuned in because he’s a tremendous fighter and I want to see greatness. I mean at the end of the day these guys aren’t my friends so I don’t need to like their personalities. But if there was one current fighter who annoys me it’s probably Joe Pyfer. Hopefully Izzy takes care of him.
That brings to mind that there was an era from the beginning to about 2010 where almost every fighter had a personality or fighting style that elicited strong reactions from people, either good or bad.
They were loved or hated, not much in between. Very few fighters from those days that people were just “meh” about.
They don’t need stars they need to deliver content to fullfil the contractual obligations. We talked about this last week
OP Is A Bot
This proves that the UFC is THE star not the fighters hence. It always has been and always will be but people just can’t seem to grasp it.
They never did.
They had Anderson Silva on top for 6-7 years with highlight after highlight and couldn’t make him a star. He was the least popular champ of his era.
They try to push people occasionally but it seems artificial and they never become true stars (O’Malley).
The real stars (Conor, Brock, etc) have always been lightening in a bottle creations of their own aura.
I think most of us understand this.
The problem is, if they create no stars and start to bleed s, what kind of tv deal you think they would be offered after this paramount contract is up.
Maybe they just save some money (which they don’t need) and let it slow down for a couple years then strap in and get serious the last 2-3 years of the contract. IDK but what they doing now is not working.
