Greatest first round ever
I love shit like this. WWE from the Vault. Anything that you never imagined would be recorded just popping up 40 years later…
It’s crazy the footage that comes up. So much history that before you would hear about, but never get to see. Now, let me look up a rare fight with Marvin Hagler. It amazes me people still watch cable tv. When you can look up endless topics and history online.
Wigfall was no joke, in or out of the ring. He was a multiple-time New England Golden Gloves champion & at a party one night, he and Hagler got into an argument & took it outside. And while Hagler was taking his jacket off, Wigfall hit him, dropped him, & put the boots to him before it was broken up. Which left bad blood between the two.
When the two of them eventually turned pro, there were plenty of people who thought Wigfall was the better pro prospect. He quickly built up an 8-0 record, while Hagler took a slower approach by going 3-0. So, when the match was made, Wigfall was the betting favorite.
That first fight was actually a tough, close affair that was even after six rounds, but Hagler won the last two & the decision.
The rematch took place a year & half later & this time Hagler was a big favorite as he was an unbeaten 10-round fighter while Wigfall had been KO’d by fringe contender, Willie Taylor after their first meeting.
This time the fight was pretty one-sided as Hagler out-boxed & outfought Wigfall before KOing him in the sixth round.
After which, Hagler went on to become a legend while Wigfall never quite achieved contender status. He retired with a decent 21-6 record, though.
There’s really only one BMF fight ever and it will always be Hagler Hearns
That was a time when boxing was a great sport now it has become celebrity boxing. I miss the days of HBO boxing after dark.
Honestly, I think the fight as a whole is somewhat overrated.
The first round was absolutely epic. Then things slowed down in the second round & Hagler knocked Hearns out in the third.
Don’t get me wrong, it’s a terrific fight, but there are better throughout history. Hell, there are some in the 80s alone that were better. They’re just not as well known.

Yeah, I remember watching that fight take place live on ESPN’s Top Rank Boxing show in the summer of 1981 while most of the country was suffering from a wicked heatwave. I was drenched by the time the fight was over.
