With a steel chair and the Shamrock Anklelock!
Prime Cro Cop beats Alex. They weigh the same, it’s fair
Whoever lands first would probably take it.
Thanks for inviting me in, I absolutely love threads like this. I can’t jump all the way in at the moment.
I will say I agree with what JD said. It is a little complicated. I’ll be back tomorrow
in the WFA
Is everyone so dyslexic that no one has corrected the first sentence of that wiki article. UCF champions?
yes
Gane made Ngannou look like Dan Gable. Evolution is hard to imagine.
But HW isn’t a technical division for the most part. Looking at the lower weights, I think the evolution is more apparent.
HW is almost exempt fron this.
This eludes to my one major gripe about teh UFC!
Every fighter, in each weight class, is playing a game to get closer to teh title!
I much preferred both seeing style vs style matchups, but also hey these two dudes are in the same weight class, lets see what happens mentality!
Current fighters only want to take fights that may lead them towards teh title! I don’t blame them.
I still do not think Frances gets enough credit for this fight!
He had shot knee’s or something and knew Gane could out point him all night and move.
Can’t remember such a display of improved wrestling!
I would still take GSP against any WW
Are these guys really that much more skilled than they were 26 years ago?
I think it’s physical preparation and recovery methods as one of the bigger areas of improvement over the years.
TK got screwed over vs Bas.
GSP, Silva and Couture are some of the all-time greats.
All-time greats are always the exception, not representative.
Compare a whole division for a better picture:
If you don’t think this is 10-0 (maybe just maybe 9-1) in favor of today’s fighters, I have a bridge to sell you.
Yes the general level is vastly higher.
BJ Penn had the BJJ. GSP had the takedown. Anderson had striking. Barnett had catch wrestling. They had, compared to other fighters of their time, one above average skill they could use to make everything else work effectively enough. Today, pretty much every fighter has above average BJJ, wrestling, and striking. Not even BJJ phenoms are competitive in the octagon today. Honestly, I think the skills that separate contenders from champs today are cardio and strength because everything else is already so high. That said, with the caliber athlete someone like GSP or Silva is, I wouldn’t write them off. They trained to be best in their time. If they were in their prime today, I think they’d adapt.
Khamzat beats Silva, Pereira beats Liddell, Islam/Khabib/Topuria beat Penn. And I don’t think any of those fights are close.
GSP is probably the only champion from the previous generation that could hang with/beat everyone in his division today. GSP vs Islam would be interesting though.
Sure you can cherrypick fights to make it seem like the sport hasn’t evolved, but at the highest levels it definitely has.
