Have MMA Fighters Really Gotten More Skilled / Better?

I was looking at the list of champions at heavyweight and light heavyweight.

Are these guys really that much more skilled than they were 26 years ago?

Let’s talk about former champs vs recent champs that are currently still towards the top of their divisions.

Josh Barnett vs Gane? Or even Randy Couture vs Gane?

What about Anderson Silva vs DDP?

GSP vs Belal?

Prime BJ Penn vs Gaethje?

I’m inclined to say yes!

I was a huge Chuck Liddell fan! He HAD an iron chin and seemed to find a way to win with his wrestling ability to get back up and later just land one.

But imagine him in his prime vs teh likes of Alexander Gustafsson!

Current heavyweight champion 2026 is Tom Aspinall, 1999 was Bas Rutten

Current light heavyweight champ is Alex Pereira, 1999 was Frank Shamrock

Yes but I enjoyed the old days better. I loved the style vs style paper rock scissors matchups where everyone had their niche. Now they can all do basically everything.

Those are two murders if matched up prime vs prime.

At competing within the limited ruleset? Yes, much better.

Are we seeing better quality “fighters” overall? I don’t think so.

Hmm, let’s look past just the champs and look at other guys in the tops of the rankings, recent champs. If the overall of fighters are really so much better.

I think cereal gains beats both with his movement easily. Silva vs DDP is a toss up. GSP tools Belal. And Gathje beats penn easily.

Barnett and Couture over Gane.

Barnett would beat him and I don’t think it would be very close.

Yep, thats my thought too.

NO. Prime Ken Shamrock takes out anyone today WITH EASE.

So with Barnett destroying Gane who is #2 Heavyweight right now, has the sport really evolved?

I also tend to think Barnett gets a little underrated historically.
Part of that he brought upon himself.
But in terms of peak ability, I think he’s one of the best HWs ever.

Yes and no.

It’s not a black & white conversation so easily defined IMO.

It’s a rabbit hole I don’t have time for at the moment ..
