When Egan was starting out, Relson was BJJ in Hawaii.
I wish 12 year old me didn’t want to be a ninja in Pearl City. LOL

I remember both the Enson and Egan in the classes. The Onzuka twins were blue or purple and then Scott was the brown belt. Good times, good times. I did a ton of my training in Relson’s garage in Kahala.

The names I remember are Carl Franks, Egan & Enson, Romulo (from the big island), the Onzuka twins, Scott Devine, and Relson. Brazilians stopped in all the time (some were some rugged ass Mufuckers) and Royce was there at that one point but I didn’t see him.

Enson and Egan opened “Grappling Unlimited” or something like that on their own. You couldn’t train at both places on that island. It was one or the other.

I heard blue belt Baret Yoshida put Royce in a triangle and could have slept him but let him out because of respect. Royce repaid his kindness with subbing him roughly. I didn’t see this however but it is common knowledge.

I wasn’t there for the Royce visit. Baret was a star from the beginning. I don’t remember him at Relson’s but he was a bad ass at Egan’s school.

my buddy had a similiar situation, he was a brown belt at the time. roy was doing a seminar a his academy. roy was showing some basic selft defense, you know the infamous front kick to the clinch and other the stuff like bjj chest , where you an your partner roll with one move at the a time. its hard to explain but if you ever went to roy gracie seminar i’m sure he showed it. anyways after the seminar they did live rolls. it was my buddys turn to roll with roy and when they tied up we felt roy was like what marc laimon said albout him. he did let roy sub him with a cross collar choke from the guard out of respect.

I joined 3 months after Baret joined and Baret was already subbing people left and right. He was a phenom.
When he subbed Shaolin as a blue belt, we weren’t surprised. He was in there from morning to night.
