I did jiu jitsu for a couple years in my 20’s. No idea why you’d want the keep doing it to learn random shit you would never do in 99.99% of your real world interactions. It’s like I can learn some leg defense on go outside and bike and walk on do fitness class with hot girls
Lol I’ve been thinking about this exact thing lately.
Simpler times - when weed was “totally harmless,” jiu-jitsu was injury free, coffee was full of “mycotoxins” and codeword ROGAN would save you 20% off on America’s favorite fuck-burrito.
I know a lot of 10th planet guys and former 10th planet guys who have injured themselves trying to submit opponents.
I’ll be 55 in a week. Sometimes I see a technique being taught and just say “I won’t be using that” because I can clearly see that over time (or right away) using the technique will lead to self injury. 10th Planet has a whole system of such techniques.
I did BJJ for about 8.5 years and quit before I hit 40. Something was always hurting I quit for a while and felt much better and never went back. I am sure if I would have still been doing it I would be in worse shape physically than I am now. I loved it and it is a cool sport but at my age I am content with never training again
I’m lucky, I train 3 tines a week with a group of about 8 guys, ranging from black belts down to some big athletic white belts.
Everyone knows each other, and nothing gets too crazy, perfect for me in my 50s.
Yeah I mean great people and environment and I get it, but it seemed saner to do CrossFit which tells you something.
I did it for a long time off an on. Strictly no gi though. I quit at the right time. Then my nephew wanted me to join with him so I went back. Did it about a year and on the last day before the school was going to close down, I got caught in a twister. No problem, I tapped out. But what I didn’t know is I had a degenerative disk. Apparently it didn’t take much twisting to really set it off. I’ve had back problems ever since. I should have quit while I was ahead lol.
I did 25 years and everything past 10 was stupid and a net negative on my health. Also a huge waste of time.
That does not look good for longevity.
Similar to Cain doing the kettle bell swing with a fuck off massive weight
Not saying this is you (it might be) but a lot of guys just can’t get themselves to put away the “must win” mindset while rolling at the gym. That mindset not only hinders progression but it’s also a recipe for injury.
My mindset is “must learn, must teach, must have fun, must protect myself so I can train tomorrow.”
I’m a black belt who gives zero shits about tapping in the gym…to anyone of any level.
I’m at that now but I’m only in it for my kids so they have no excuse not to do it.
I’ve talked about this at times on the OG as well. On the Underground, Sherdog and other early era UFC/BJJ forums the prevailing narrative was how fit and healthy we’d all be in old age, just like Helio. Everyone would make fun of those fools that would get old while our combat yoga kept us young.
I think that stuff faded out in the early 2010s when everyone that started in the late 90s/early 2000s had a decade of injuries and age related wear and tear accumulated and we all realised the truth - Rorian is a cunt.

I have that mindset. I destroyed my neck from toughing out everyone spamming guillotines for years. I was done with NOGI JJ by 35. My neck always hurts.
Yeah.
They’re doing it wrong.
BJJ is basically wrestling. Wrestling is for young people, not for old people. Then you guys wonder why you have neck, back, and knee pain and surgeries.
That’s why I train in Chinese internal arts, Aikido, and occasionally Kenpo/Kung-Fu/Gracie Combatives.
You guys keep putting your bodies through the meat grinder and for what? For ego? Get outta here with that mess.
I just started a little over a year ago at 37. My school is mostly people around my age so no one goes really hard, but we know when we can. My coach and a couple of my partners are at Worlds this week. It’s helped me get back in shape and gave me an outlet for my energy and a new hobby.

I remember one time Eddie was on Rogan they were both glazing BJJ about how it’s so perfect for the average person to do and how it wasn’t hard on the body like Judo. Then like a few months later they were both talking about how much their bodies were breaking down and what surgeries they were going to have lol
They’re not entirely wrong, but it really comes down to how you train… If you’re going hard in sparring every day as if you’re prepping for competition (whether you compete or not) BJJ can tear up your body. If you train in a more relaxed manner and focus on technique without going all out on a regular basis it is easier on the body than Judo.

I train mostly nogi now. Not on purpose, it just how my schedule has been working out. I find nogi to be easier on the body than gi.
