In Which Camp Do You Belong

“A tiger never changes it’s stripes” - Meaning people don’t change

-Or-

“Never judge a person by their past” - People do change, even later in life

Me?? I tend to believe people CAN change. But often do not. Either due to being selfish, or like being pitied.

People who believe in absolutes tend to lack applicable life experience.

While that may be true, I hear sentiments like in the OP all the time.

Or they’re Sith.

I’m of this mindset as well. Biased here as I’ve changed over time. Though I’ve kept a higher percentage of unchanged.

Somewhere in the middle.

It’s exceedingly rare that people change their actual character. They may make superficial changes but their true character doesn’t change.

If you don’t mind, do you care to elaborate this point?

I used to lie, steal, break-ins, fights, selfish…

The only thing I do out of those is lie, but only to the ones I love.

Of course.

It’s a cliche.

Doesn’t make it a rule.
People just repeat shit.

Some people can change, some people can’t.
Even the word “change” would need some kind of qualifier if we were to go down the rabbit hole.

But absolutes don’t hold up against the almost infinite variety of human experience.

People can change and can seemingly change significantly and near permanently. But when the chips are down, or you’re in a time of crisis, you dance with the one who brung you and any unauthentic “changes” will fall to the wayside.

I like to err on the side of caution and believe that absolutely everybody should be killed.

I believe the absolute best indicator of future behavior is past behavior. I’ve used that as a barometer in most of the interactions I’ve had with people, and rarely been shown that my methodology in predicting how things will go is faulty.

I’m jaded but I have seen people many times appear to change only to eventually return to being a piece of shit.

Some people can change but it’s rare. If someone is a cheater, liar, etc the odds are they’re just looking for the next angle.

What’s that joke about a light bulb has to want to change? Yeah, that. I think people have the capacity to change, but I don’t think too many want to.

Anyone can change if they feel it’s necessary. Most people can’t feel like it’s necessary.
